I’ll be in Málaga for a week between Spain and Türkiye tours in May. Looking for recommendations for must sees in Málaga and day trips. I’m interested in taking day trips with tour company or by train. Won’t have a car.
This is just a general travel forum, not a contact for the Rick Steves (RS) organization. The posters on here are just normal travelers.
I can say that RS does not offer day trips, but if you look through one of the Spain guides that includes Malaga, there are likely some local guides listed.
There are quite a few things to do in Malaga. By train or bus you can easily get to Granada, Seville, or Cordoba; all great towns. There are likely local tours to Ronda and the "White Towns", having transport provided for those would be handy, as public transport is a bit more difficult, or at least not as timely for a day trip. I suppose if you really want, you can get to Madrid in less than 3 hours, but that would require at least a night or two.
A RS guide that does private tours is Jorge A. Roman. Malaga is his home town, though he currently lives in Madrid. He does many tours in Andalusia. You could look for him on facebook, Travelingwithjorge or his website travelingwithjorge.wordpress.com
Malaga:
Aero museum
Glass Museum
Picasso museum
Automobile museum
Market
There are plenty of places to visit in Malaga including the Gibralfaro castle, the Alcazaba, the Cathedral, Muelle Uno, Roman Theatre, Carmen Thyssen museum, Atarazanas Market, the promenade by the beach/ sea and much more.
Day trips by bus to Nerja, Estepona, Marbella, Mijas Pueblo and Antequera to name a few. Other towns can be reached by the local commuter train.
The TI can help you with tours and questions. Enjoy!
Lots to see and do in Malaga:

The most popular day trip by train is probably to Cordoba, but you won't see much of it in just one day
Take a look at the El Caminito del Rey. Walking this trail was the highlight of our time in Andalusia.
