A Month in Spain & Portugal Itinerary

Hello,

I'm from Southern California (19) and plan to fly with my girlfriend (18) to Spain and Portugal leaving May 19th (Landing May 20th) and leaving June 19th for a total of 30 nights.
I've been extremely lucky and have traveled all over Europe, but my girlfriend has only just this past summer visited to Cabo. So... she pretty much hasn't left the country lol.

So, so far this is the itinerary that I have created for us. LAX →Barcelona(4 nights) →Madrid(4 nights)→Toledo(Day Trip from Madrid) →Cordoba(3 nights) →Granada(3 nights) →Seville(4 nights) → Ibiza(3 nights)(Plane) →Lisbon(4 nights) (Plane) →Porto(3 nights) →Paris(2 nights)(Plane) → LAX(Plane)

BTW, snuck in Paris for 2 nights because there are no direct flights from Portugal to LAX, and my girlfriend has always wanted to visit Paris.

How does this look? I haven't yet bought anything just yet. Any suggestions for hotels or hostels in these places? Any suggestions overall for this long of a trip. This will be both of our first times traveling this far away from home alone.

Thanks

From Madrid I would go to Granada and then from Granada to Seville - add an extra night to Seville and do a daytrip to Cordoba from there (I recently did this and it's quick/easy as a daytrip). I would then add the extra 2 nights to Paris because seems like you only have one full day there with your current plan.

As to hotels or hostels, what is your budget?

Forget Paris- the preparations for the Olympics will be in full swing, the advance teams arriving, and it's been reported that lodging is already quite expensive. Do France neck year! Safe travels!

I think times in each place look reasonable (well, Paris...); you've done a good job on that. Before locking down the itinerary and beginning to book lodgings, I'd suggest figuring out what dates you'll be in each city and checking hotel rates (or rates for private rooms in hostels, etc.) in all the cities on booking.com, just to be sure you aren't going to hit a catastrophically expensive time somewhere that would require you to make a change. You've got Taylor Swift's tour to consider this summer, in addition to the usual high-demand sporting events and the like. I once paid about triple the going rate in a small town in the Baltics because of some sort of motor event in the area. I wasn't a happy camper, but I suspected it was my one and only trip to that area, so I just paid the freight.

I believe you may have a problem in Paris because of the Olympics. People are reporting hotel rates are more than double the usual, and Paris isn't cheap to begin with. For this one location, it might be worth considering beds in hostel dormitories, if you find those still available.

You're going to run into heat in Spain, especially from Madrid south. Be sure your lodgings are air conditioned; that's not a place to skimp.

In the absence of special events, I'd expect rooms in Cordoba, Seville, Granada and probably also Porto to be considerably less expensive than Barcelona and Madrid. I'm not sure what you'll find in Lisbon, Toledo and Ibiza.

With all the moving around you’re doing pack light and do laundry when needed. I don’t know of any hostel that doesn’t have a washer and dryer but just about everyone uses them so get an early start on laundry days.
I made a few tweaks and recommend flying on budget air carriers from Barcelona to Ibiza to Malaga. Flights on low-cost carriers charge additional fees for checked baggage. It’s best to bring one carry-on to avoid additional charges and saves time at the airport if checking luggage.
You put together an excellent itinerary but you short-changed Paris. Paris deserves five nights if you explore the neighborhoods. With two nights you only have time for the historical center but nothing else. Your girlfriend is young and has the rest of her life to visit FR when she can also include Provence and the riviera.
I agree you want nonstop flights between LAX and Europe. Google Flights shows nonstop flights between LAX and Barcelona / Madrid. Fly into Barcelona and out of Madrid (or vice vs.):
LAX
Barcelona - fly from Barcelona to Ibiza
Ibiza - fly from Ibiza to Malaga. Take a direct bus from Malaga’s airport to Granada (2h 30m).
Granada
Cordoba
Seville – from Seville take a direct bus to Tavira, PT (2h) or fly nonstop from Seville to Lisbon.
Tavira - from Tavira take a direct bus to Lisbon (4h).
Lisbon
Porto (fly nonstop from Porto to Madrid).
Madrid – day trip to Toledo from Madrid.

Don't skip Ibiza. It's a long time since I've been, but I'm sure I could still find pockets of magic like I remember from my youth. There's nowhere on earth like it.

If you don’t mind moving around, you could take a day from Cordoba, Granada and/or Lisbon to add to Paris. And, maybe, reverse itinerary and head to Paris first.

I thought I might throw up a fairly lengthy post about Ibiza, since it's been mentioned. It doesn't get much love on here but it's a truly special place.

Little bit of Ibiza history.

It's been an escape since at least the mid sixties. It was always a Catalan stronghold and Franco pretty much left the Balearics to get on with things. It became part of the hippy trail towards the late 60's, attracting all sorts from all over. Tourism grew throughout the 70's; package tours from all over Europe, the rich and famous, more hippies. The reputation as somewhere "anything goes" grew from there.

My interest in Ibiza stemmed from music. Some DJs from London; Nicky Holloway, Danny Rampling and some others, had gone on holiday there in 1986 or 87 and heard Alfredo play at Amnesia. They brought back Alfredo's style of mixing up flamenco and other Spanish styles, left field pop, Chicago house and disco and played it at their clubs Shoom, The Trip in 1988 and it became "Balearic Beat". I was already reading The Face and i-D magazines at 14 and absorbing everything I could about music, so I was right on top of what was happening in London, from Scotland.

I first went out to the island in 1992, age 18. It seemed like a dream come true to be actually sitting at Cafe Del Mar, watching the sun go down, soundtracked by the actual Jose Padilla. Cafe Del Mar mixtapes had already been circulating in the UK for some years so it was amazing to be actually sat there at Cafe Del Mar in San An experiencing it in person.

I went out quite a lot in the 90's. I was lucky enough to have experienced Amnesia, the terrace at Space, Manumission at its most crazy in 1995 and DC10 in its very early days.

There's a lot more on offer than the clubs and music though. There's fantastic beaches, beautiful rocks and cliffs and lots of really quiet rural villages if you head inland a bit. I wasn't joking about "pockets of magic" in my previous post. Sometimes Ibiza can feel truly magical in a way only very special places can.

I still feel a connection to the island because I have so many good memories, so I keep up to date with what's happening a little on social media.

San Antonio is party central. That's where you want to be to get the full modern, corporate, superclub, beach club, happy hour bar experience. Lots of people love it.

Ibiza Town is more chilled but still happening. Traditionally Ibiza's gay friendly town, like most places that were almost exclusively gay in the past, they've got more mixed in current times as gay culture is probably a bit more mainstream. This is where you park your yacht if you've got a bit of class.

Portinatx, way up in the north of the island, is a good spot for a quieter stay in Ibiza. There's still decent facilities for going on vacation but it's far from the madding crowd of San Antonio. If I were going to Ibiza I'd be going to the north of the island. I'd feel more at home there in my age range and I've heard there's lots of folks still living very beautiful, peaceful lifestyles in communities I'd like to visit.

ETA: I had lots of links but it broke the forum code so I had to edit everything out!

I would do Cordoba as a day trip and use those 3 days for Malaga. And yeah skip Paris right now. If you want a direct flight do a couple 3 nights in London or Dublin instead. London is the greatest city in the world in my opinion.
