A month in Malaga...daytrips with public transit?

I'll be renting an apartment in Malaga city for the month of Sept. and am hoping to get in a number of day trips out of the city and possibly one or two -overnights. I will not, however, have a car. Is it possible to get to and visit Ronda, Grazalema and other white hill towns without a car? What about any smaller non-resort towns along the coast?
Finally, would very much appreciate any suggestions about possible day trips via public transit. Thanks!

We use malaga as our home base and are delighted with your choice.
Short answer, you have an excellent public transportation hub at your disposal for meeting travel needs.
We love the bus service and encourage it's use.
Coastal village exploration becomes more quaint heading east of malaga. Heading west commences an endless condo canyon.
We advise overnight trips to granada, ronda and seville.
It is also easy to rent a car from the downtown train terminal. If you think you might do so then please obtain an IDP from AAA FOR $20.
I could load you up with relevant web sites, but not all folks desire the direct input.
September is a fabulous month to be there.
Enjoy!

You are going to have a hard time linking anymore than two or three pueblos blancos by bus if you want to return to Malaga that day. The bus services are not scheduled around you, the tourist. Grazalema I think will be a three hour each way journey from Malaga.
'smaller non-resort towns along the coast' - hmmm, 'non-resort'!
'possible day trips via public transit' - All the ones you like the sound of in your guide book, it should provide the transport detail.
Plus, if not suggested or you do not have enough, Antequera by bus www.alsa.es and Cordoba by train www.renfe.com. Or simply take the map and google.

Use this link http://m.viamichelin.com to explore locations and gain a sense of didtances. As you explore strike up conversations to learn of which bus routes are best to catch at what times in order to make for more effective use of your time. We love Malaga for the geographic range it allows us to reach via public transport. Enjoy.

Thanks all for the reassurance about my choice and for the advice. Marbleskies I would love some web site suggestions. As I'm already in Europe, getting English-language tour books can be a difficult, plus I can't lug them with me everywhere!

KMPitts56, I have no great secret source for an apartment. I found it through AirBNB. Not the cheapest way to do it, but hosts do often give you a break for a stay of a month or more, especially in less popular times.

Thank you for the web site information. I will use them. We are planning to be in Southern Spain this winter - February-April? Want a longer term home base to just experience. Does anyone have a favorite guide book that they would recommend?
