A last minute trip to Spain for a first time family of four

a last-minute family trip to Spain this summer for a family of four (2 adults, 13 and 15 years old) for 2.5 weeks

*** fly in and out of Madrid from mid July to early August
*** have to go to Huesca for a few days after 3-day stay in Madrid
*** free to visit any place in Spain after Huesca
*** need to go to Alicante area for a few days after Huesca but not right away

Looking for suggestion for places to visit
*** we prefer outdoor and can visit a few museums/churches along the way
*** love the food (based on the map, san sebastián is out of our way, but based on the info provided above, should we visit? we don’t know when we will be back Spain)
*** would love to visit/hike one of the 16 national parks
*** prefer to take advantage of train like Ave and regional ones, can drive if needed

Thank you all.

Between Madrid and Huesca, and returning to Madrid (or close to airport) for the flight out, you have a week covered already. How long do you need to be in Alicante?
I recently visited Cuenca, which was fabulous and there is lots of great hiking in the area. People rave about Teruel and Albaraccin, so I would consider renting a car and exploring between Huesca and Alicante.

This is a 5 hour drive from Alicante: Caminito del Rey, a wonderful hike that should not be missed. Spain will be so hot I would want to do all my hiking into the ocean. You can buy tickets for the hike on-line, no guide necessary. Park at the bottom, bus to the top, that way when your done with your hike you can just get into the car and drive off. I think a 13/15 year old would love to see Granada, especially on the weekend. J
