My wife and I are planning a trip from Dallas to Berlin in late April. I found a good price on American Airlines that has a Dallas to Madrid leg with a 7 hour layover in Madrid before continuing on to Berlin. I am thinking about booking it with the intention of our leaving the airport and taking the Metro into Madrid to have lunch and look around a bit before returning for our flight to Berlin. Our flight arrives in Madrid at 9:05 a.m. and the next one leaves at 4:05 p.m. That sounds like plenty of time for an excursion into Madrid since we have never been there before. Does anyone has experience with such an idea in Madrid? Any suggestions? Thanks.
I was in Madrid about 3 weeks ago.
You have a enough time to try the Mercado San Miguel
http://mercadodesanmiguel.es/ or some place around there
(it gets extremely crowded after noon) for a variety of eats and to see the Plaza Mayor close by

and then back to the airport.
Study the directions on how to get there

Thanks so much for your help. I appreciate it.
Madrid Barajas is large with extensive distances to get out to the gates. Allow enough time for traveling within the airport.
As mentioned by Suki, give yourself plenty of time to get to your gate at the Madrid airport and remember you are heading back through security. Also, the metro trip to Puerto del Sol is about a 50 minute metro trip one way. You should have plenty of time to enjoy a nice lunch and head back to the airport.
