4 or 5 Star Hotel in Barcelona Near Plaça de Catalunya / Les Rambles

Hello everyone,

Can anyone provide a recommendation for a top-notch hotel in the heart of the action in Barcelona (Near Plaça de Catalunya / Les Rambles)? I have never been to Barcelona and I will be going for my birthday so I am looking for something really special. I want to step out of the hotel and be in the middle of the action but experience top-notch accommodation (think d'angleterre quality hotel in Copenhagen - if you have ever been). I looked through the thread but did not see anything recent. I have been on tripadvisor but like to hear from the Rick Steves crowd.

Rick's own recommendations are all in his guidebook. Those descriptions are succinct, but include a comparison of the amenities. For instance, Hotel Catalonia Placa Catalunya has 4 stars, but the lobby, pool, and other public spaces are more elegant than the "simple" rooms.

Not sure exactly what you are looking for in a 4 star - but we stayed at Hotel Montecarlo and really loved it. I think on expedia it is listed as four star. We got a really good rate (booked really early), and when I saw a lower rate later, I just emailed them and they adjusted. :)

The location was awesome. It is small, but I thought the service was great and the beds were super comfy!

I don't know how many stars it has, but you might have a look at THIS hotel, which is very close to La Rambla and Plaça Catalunya. I found the room to be very comfortable, the staff were wonderful and they serve a great breakfast. Items like eggs are cooked to order so if you want that, just ask the staff. As I recall, they also had Champagne at the breakfast buffet, so that might be something to have on your birthday.
