3 nights near Madrid question - & update

I’m looking for some suggestions on a city near Madrid to spend several nights mid-June.

First, I am not interested in staying in Madrid - I will have been there a few days and I will go back at some other point in the future. I have spent several nights in Segovia and in Toledo, plus time in Andalusia so I’m not looking to go south.

With only 3 nights and a return flight from Madrid (4th night back in Madrid for the flight), I don’t want to spend too much time in transit. Zaragoza seemed like it might fit. Am I doing it a disservice to only have about 2 1/2 days? Salamanca? Avila?

I will be doing a longer trip to northern Spain probably in 2026, but I have these few nights I can do something with. I just thought I would ask for thoughts from those who have spent more time in Spain than me.

In addition to Burgos, León or Zamora are nice. Closer to Madrid is Alcalá de Henares. It’s about 30 minutes from the airport.

Salamanca is nice while Ávila only takes a few hours to see. Without transportation, one would probably get bored with Ávila. It’s good for an overnight at most.

I agree with dlindstrom that La Cartuja, a few walkable kilometers from the center of Burgos, is worth visiting.

Zaragoza is nice, they have the cathedral, a Moorish palace, several museums, including a Goya museum, some Roman sights, but mainly just a very relaxed city. While many pass through Zaragoza, few stay, so it does not feel like a "tourist town". The weather will be warm and dry in June, better than the South, not as hot. The fast trains make it seem a lot closer to Madrid than it is.

Off the main foreign tourist track is the beautiful tiny town of Pedraza and the slightly larger town of Sepulveda.

We spent 2 nights in Pedraza and loved it; it's famous for suckling lamb but restaurants serve other things as well.

From Sepulveda you can visit the national park and see the giant vultures.....there is a lovely inexpensive hotel near the main plaza.

I can offer more ideas if you let us know if you will rent a car, and how much you want to spend on a hotel.

Burgos is a lovely small city.
Segovia is lovely.
And yes, Cordoba is easy to reach and would be wonderful for a few days, and very different from Madrid. I spent 5 days last year, but it will be very, very hot in June.

There are other places accessible by car.

Wow. I go to sleep and wake up to so many good suggestions!

dlindstrom, I DID have Burgos on my list of places to visit, but had somehow thought it was further (timewise) than it is upon a second look.

geovagriffith, I agree Cordoba is lovely (and the sort of place I would be looking for) but I have been twice and would like to try somewhere I haven’t been. Plus a little on the hot side in June.

Ok, jamielsabio, I have now noted León and Zamora. I knew you would have good suggestions. And I am going to assume you have probably stayed in Alcalá de Henares before a flight? But probably with a car? If there’s a good way to the airport, I would much rather stay somewhere like that the night before a flight home.

Paul, that reinforces my thoughts about Zaragoza. I had thought I would include it in next year’s trip - but then wondered about this few days. So it is definitely on the “to be visited” list.

ekscrunchy, now Pedraza and Sepulvida are new names for me! This time isn't a typical “visit Spain” trip and I won’t have a car. But I most likely will in 2026. That trip list is getting longer…… So once my brain gets focused on that trip, I may message you!

Mr. É, I can’t end EVERY trip in Budapest. Well, I could, but then I might have to buy an apartment.

We spent two nights in Alcalá de Henares in 2022 and yes, we did have a rental car. Somebody more knowledgeable will know more about public transportation. Maybe acraven will chime in since she uses public transportation and has been there.

I think Zaragoza has the most to offer, lots of history on display between the Aljafería Palace, the various preserved Roman structures of Caesaraugusta, and the Basilica del Pilar, plus very convenient connection to Madrid via the AVE. I always try to stay at Hotel NH Ciudad de Zaragoza when I'm there, perfect location next to the Plaza del Pilar and recently renovated Mercado Central de Zaragoza.

3 nights is the perfect amount of time for Zaragoza, plus you can consider a day trip to Olite or Tarazona.

There are very frequent trains to Alcala de Henares, which is on the C2 Cercanias line. I don't know whether it's easy to get to places other than Madrid, should uou want to do that.

I'd caution you that Zaragoza can be very hot in June, even if it's not quite as bad as points south.

Zaragoza weather -- June 2022

June 2023 and 2024 weren't quite as hot as 2022.

I've also spent multiple nights in Salamanca and Burgos and enjoyed both.

acraven, heat is definitely a consideration. Thank you for the reminder - I hadn’t gotten around to checking that yet. I may need to save Zaragoza for October, 2026. (And no, Madrid isn’t on the agenda for this part of the trip.)

ekscrunchy, thanks for the link. I am off to read!

I wanted to circle back around with a quick report on my 3 nights (2 1/2 days).

I ultimately decided on Burgos for a few reasons - and it was just what I was looking for (although other places probably could have been as well). I opted for a late afternoon bus back to the airport on my final day and a stay at the nearby Hilton just to sleep before my return flight - it has a very nice shuttle.

I took the Alsa bus direct from and back to the airport T4 bus station. The station is well-marked and easy to find from T4 and is very modern with a large nice waiting area, a small cafe, good bathrooms, and good signs for where busses are arriving. From there I took a 3 hour direct bus to the bus station in Burgos. I purchased my tickets online ahead of time. The busses do sell out - before I had fully decided which time I wanted, the earlier bus sold out so I had to wait several hours for a later one. Both busses were either completely or mostly full. It made no stops - I didn’t check a toilet but did see one woman who appeared to head that way.

My hotel was not far from the cathedral and an easy flat 10 min walk from the bus station. The train station is further out (trains didn’t suit my schedule this time).

I was not looking to do a lot of sightseeing, but the cathedral is impressive. The audio guide you can download to your phone was great and the path through the cathedral took me through a large part. I would do a repeat in order to be able to better process the last half. Senior price of €9 was a bargain.

I also went to the Museum of Human Evolution. I had read about it but ultimately decided between it and the Museum of Burgos based on mentions from here. Thank you, Ms. Jo and jaimeelsabio. Senior price of free was a double bargain. Ha! The museum is modern, big, and very well signed with Spanish and English. Especially of interest to me was the bottom floor record and display of findings from the nearby archeological site Atapuerca (which you can see with a guided tour).

Otherwise, I just wandered, ate, and sat by the small river in the beautiful park area. There are interesting places that I didn’t see (these few days were about just being somewhere and relaxing), so I will probably return when I head back to that area with a car in a year or two. Big thanks to dlindstron for advice!

And Zaragoza is definitely on the next-time-longer-trip list!

Hi TTM, glad to hear that you enjoyed Burgos. It is also a good thing to remind people that the bus can be a good alternative to the trains in Spain.

Just a couple of question....

Did you have any Morcilla?
How crowded was it? How would you compare the tourist "presence/pressure" in Burgos compared to some of the other places you visited on your trip?

On this trip I was in Madrid, Seville, and Malaga. I will say that there were plenty of tourists there but none were overcrowded. Madrid obviously the most crowded

Burgos was much calmer, while still having people. Most restaurants closed between lunch and dinner (but not all). I mainly heard Spanish spoken, with English being others in my hotel basically. It was fun to sit in the park by the river and hear the school kids going home from school in the afternoon. In the museum, there were quite a few high school groups in guided tours.

I didn’t make it to the morcilla. But I discovered I liked lemon radler. Ha!

Thanks so much for the update; I liked Burgos, too. And it's good to learn that the buses worked out so well.

Thanks, ekscrunchy! I am looking forward to exploring more in a year or two and have noted some of your posts. :)

Thanks, Elizabeth. You saw I took the bus and didn’t have to maneuver Chamartin again. Lol.
