Hi! We are planning a trip to Spain in October to Madrid and Barcelona. We are planning 4 days/3 nights in each city and have enough time to do a 24 hour day trip from one of the cities as well and would love suggestions.
We will have a 5 and 7 year old with us as well. So looking for options for the day trip and any suggestions of great places to go with kids of that age as well.

Reality check: 3 nights in a city doesn't give you 4 days there; it yields 2 days and some hours on your arrival day (though if arriving from North America, jet lag may wipe out the first partial day).
Perhaps you meant to write that you'll have 4 nights/3 days in each city. In that case:
Madrid: Although Toledo is my favorite among the many options here, I think Segovia might be better with children the age of yours; the aqueduct is a "wow" that is likely to appeal to children. (Note: I have no children.)
Barcelona: I like Girona a lot. There's a wall you can walk on. But with the kids, a beach destination might be better. I'm not a beach person, so I'll leave it to others to suggest their favorites. I think there's enough in Barcelona to occupy your time there, however.
