2-week twin city holiday in May/June - Seville and.........?

We are looking for a 2 week holiday in May/June in Seville and one other location (60+ Mum and Dad and adult son). So many friends have loved Seville that we would like that as one location but are struggling with the other. Cadiz, Cordoba, Granada, Marbella and Madrid have all come up as possibilities.

We're from the UK and we would be flying out of London preferably Gatwick, then Heathrow so presumably arriving/returning from Seville, Jerez, Malaga or Madrid. Have I missed any?

We would be looking to stay in an apartment. We will hire a car at some point but are flexible on when during the stay. We like wandering around old towns, lovely views, food markets and good food. Anything featuring animals is always a bonus - wildlife park, well-run zoos but not bullfighting. Gentle walking, nothing too strenuous due to a dodgy ankle. Visiting local towns - that's probably where the hire car would come in.

We're not into lying on beaches or upmarket shopping and don't need nightlife other than good restaurants.

Any advice gratefully received as we appreciate we've left it a bit late.

We paired Seville with Madrid for one Spain visit and used the "transit day" between the two to include a day in Cordoba. We found it a really nice pairing and both Madrid and Seville were full of things to see and do. Cordoba (specifically the Mezquita) was a great addition.

From Cadiz, we visited Jerez for the horse show ( a wonderful show), and obviously, when we were in Granada, the main attraction for us was the Alhambra, and that's an easy "must see" for Spain at some point.

For me, it's hard to not choose Madrid first and foremost for your pairing, since a country's capital and all the culturally relevant options there is always hard to beat.

Endless options! I’d do the city break and then pick up a car and stay in a smaller village. I’m a sea lover (plus June is hot!), so something like Vejer de La Frontera. Use car while there to explore.

Are you aware of how hot it may well be in Andalucia in May and June? That is not the time of year I'd want to head that way. If you must, I'd travel as early in May as you possibly can.

Seville weather -- May 2025

Seville weather -- June 2025

Weather varies a lot from year to year, so I'd encourage you to use the pull-down box at the right, just above the graph, to see data for May and June of other recent years.

Granada is at altitude so will probably be a bit cooler than Seville and Cordoba.

Thank you all for your thoughtful replies. I really liked the idea of Madrid but we decided that, as we could easily go to Madrid on a mini-break (we are both retired!) we would rule it out this time.

Unfortunately, we are aware that it will be hotter than we would like but we are unable to go at any other time and will obviously be making sure to go for air-conditioned accommodation and making sure we build in plenty of time out of the sun. Our dates will be the end of May and a few days in June.

We were leaning towards Seville and Cadiz but I'm having trouble finding anywhere which includes parking and we'd like a car to explore the coast going south from there. May have to revisit that idea. Is there somewhere we could be within easy reach of Cadiz by car or train for day trips? Perhaps Jerez or El Puerto de Santa Maria? Anywhere with parking is at least a 30-minute drive and I imagine that parking in Cadiz would be a problem in May so hoping the the train would ne a better option.

You might check out the countryside between Vejer and the coast, and along the coast...look at towns like Zahara de los Atunes and Conil de la Frontera. The coastline there has a reputation for being windy so that could mitigate the high temperatures. Barbate is a working town in that area; rentals are likely to be less expensive than in other towns in the area and the town is very lively with lots of bars and restaurants..also has a long, wide sandy beach. Very famous for restaurants specializing in blue fin tuna. (entire area has these)

Look, too, in and around Medina Sidonia (and Benalup)...still within an easy ride to the coast. Medina is a classic Andalusia "white town" on a hill, with a castle, and gets few foreign tourists.....

From there you are within an hour of Jerez, Arcos, Cadiz, etc...and the airport of Jerez.

The Parador in Cadiz has parking. It's a modern building on the sea, very near the centre.

You might also think about Malaga, lovely city, several hotels have parking and you can fly to from UK from there.

I concur with Lin C. I was just in southern Spain for the third year in a row. Sevilla is my favorite, and I think either Cadiz or Malaga would pair nicely with it. These are my impressions: Go to Cadiz if you mainly love being outdoors walking in a city & love a setting that feels authentically ancient. Select Malaga if you’re interested in some great smaller museums & a more beautified city.
