And once you have it on board, where will you put it? Some trains have luggage racks at the end of the car, but a 32" bag sounds pretty big to throw into an overhead rack. (Leaving it on the seat next to you is NOT a way to make friends on a crowded train/bus.)

Busses between cities (i.e. coach busses) - yes. Luggage is kept in a large hold below the bus.

Trains - at the end of many train cars is a luggage rack. A 32'' suitcase will fit, but it will not fit in the rack near your seat. Meaning you can't keep your eyes on it, so consider a good lock.

You may not be able to take it on local transport (busses, subway trains). No one will stop you - you just won't fit most of the time. Practically speaking, you will be limited to cabs or walking from the train station/airport to your hotel.

Are you taking some sort of special equipment? For 14 days you should be able to go a fair bit smaller, but if your circumstances require a large bag it is possible. It will be a real hinderance, though - you need to decide if it's worth it.

james.. I have done 5 weeks with a 22 inch bag.. remember.. you its not a fashion show.. so unless you have some special reason to need such a large bag ( a wedding to attend and bring formal wear, sports equipment, relocating for school etc) I would strongly suggest you could go a lot smaller for a short trip and be fine. I just got back from Europe about 10 days ago.. train from airport to city was so crowded I had to rest my suitcase on my lap.. it sucked.. but at least it was small.

It's true one can do a very long trip with a small bag.

You can even do it while looking stylish (a fact that doesn't matter to a lot of the super-light packers out there, so something that isn't often said!). It just takes some planning. Don't think your choices are between 32" or dressing in a way you don't like. A small bag and some planning, or even a medium size bag could work just fine. This is for normal touring, there are of course situations when a large bag is necessary.

The best answer is to dynamically reconsider how much actually need to pack and to challenge yourself to do more with far less. Consider, the best purchase you may make in Spain is the shirt you did not pack, but purchased and will now get to wear back home. Wonderful wearable memories which can far extend the trip everytime you put it on.

The less you lug the happier you shall be.

It may fit on the bottom of the luggage rack on a train, but only if no one has put another smaller piece there first. This is likely if [1] you aren't the first person to board the car and/or [2] if you aren't boarding at the origin point.

Anything over 25" will be difficult.

Thirty-two is really pretty big. The big issue is that it will be very easy for a 32" bag to get so heavy that it is very difficult to handle. If you really need that much space, it would make more sense to have two, 20 or 22" inch rolling bags. Far easier to handle two smaller and therefore lighter bags than one huge bag weighing fifty or more pounds. But to answer your question - Yes, you can. There will be room.

I understand from your previous thread that you're considering the Rick Steves 14-day Tour of Spain. Please do not bring this large suitcase. I'm being blunt and serious about this. Our tour conditions specify that, "Each tour member is allowed to bring just one airline-carry-on-size piece of luggage (approx. 21" x 14" x 9") plus a small day pack or shoulder bag."

I have traveled for months with a carry-on sized bag and can tell you that it's still pretty easy to pack more than you can carry. Don't tempt yourself to fill up something even bigger. You may also want to bring a smaller, collapsible bag to use for shopping, laundry, carrying home souvenirs, etc.

Might you be able to switch your initial digits? as in 41 day trip and a 23 inch suitcase. Now, that would be wonderful! (Even though you still often would not be able to carry it on.)

Yes, if you really need to. If you meet the airline 66-inch linear rule it will probably fit. I've used the LL Bean Adventure Duffle Extra Large 32+17+15 =64 Lin inches but with age switched to the Rolling Adventure Large 30+15+13=58 Lin inches. These gear bags have fit coaches and trains in the UK, Norway, Austria and German, Czech and Italian coaches. And my 210 cm ski box came with me on trains, planes, coaches. But I haven't been to Spain.

Long distance coaches with under seat luggage compartments are easy. Local city buses a different story. If you have baggage, avoid commute period city busses.

Railcars may have luggage areas at the end of the train. Carry-on size luggage fit overhead racks. But luggage space can be at a premium, especially during holiday travel periods.

But as others noite, if you don't need the gear, smaller and lighter is better.

I can't travel without a checked bag because the cabin limits are so low here (8 kg.). I have a 22" wheelie (carry on size - or at least it used to be) and I have a 25" wheelie. Oddly they weigh the same. So I take the bigger one. I pack as light as I can so there's less to lug around, but it's easier to pack/unpack the roomier bag. And there's spare room for souvenirs and presents.

Tour tip - take a gym bag (or similar) for 1-night stays, maybe some 2-nighters too. You can pack what you need for a short stay in the small bag and leave your suitcase on the tour bus.
