14-Day Itinerary for Spain

As with most of my trips, when I start planning an itinerary I wish I had just a little longer trip to squeeze everything in! I could really use some suggestions.

This is what I've started with, but it feels very rushed. Just due to distances, I wonder if I should cut Barcelona and concentrate on Madrid and the south of Spain.

  1. Flight arrives from US to Madrid in a.m.
  2. Madrid- full day
  3. Madrid or side trip to Segovia or Toledo
  4. Madrid to Barcelona- morning AVE train
  5. Barcelona- full day
  6. Barcelona to Granada- full travel day by train
  7. Granada - full day
  8. Granada- full day
  9. pick up rental car, drive through Andalucia to Tarifa to spend night
  10. day trip to Tangier in Morocco, night in Tarifa
  11. drive to Seville
  12. Full day in Seville
  13. Seville to Madrid by AVE
  14. Flight Madrid to US

If I cut Barcelona I would slow things down in the Hill Towns and add some nights in Arcos, Ronda, Zahara or Grazalema.

Thanks for your help!

What time of year are you traveling? If mid-summer, I would prefer not to spend two full weeks in Madrid + Andalucía and would tend to want to keep Barcelona, which is likely to have somewhat more moderate weather. Otherwise, I'd say dump anything so the trip can breathe.

I would first cut Tangier. It's not the best of Morocco and it's going to cost you about two days.

You might explore the possibility of flying Barcelona to Granada.

Something else that would help would be hopping on a train on your arrival day and heading to one of the other cities you want to visit. Leave all your Madrid time for the end of the trip so you don't have to waste a lot of the last full day relocating. You'll also avoid one time-consuming hotel change. Your arrival day is probably not going to be very productive anyway.

I definitely see the advantage of going ahead and getting on a train the first day after arriving at the airport. I was figuring on that day being a wash anyway since I'll probably be tired and jet lagged. I do worry about the timing. I understand it's cheaper to get train tickets in advance, but there's the chance the flight is late. Fortunately I have limited plane changes- AUS-ATL-MAD- which minimizes possible problems. It should arrive 8:30 a.m. Suggestions for the train ticket? How much time to allow?

I'm reluctant to give same-day-as-arrival scheduling advice because so much can go wrong when airports are involved. There could be a delay in Immigration as well as a delay on the flight itself. Then you have to get into town, to the Atocha Station, which means waiting time before your train/bus departs the airport and then the transit time into town.

Checking Renfe, I see that there are hourly trains to Sevilla-Santa Justa, plus the occasional extra train. The May 2 tickets cannot be purchased yet, so I looked at Tuesday, April 18. Fares for the late-morning/early-afternoon trains are currently between 47 euros and 60 euros; perhaps they were a bit lower when they initially went on sale. Compare that to the 75.50 euro fare I see for tomorrow's fast trains (it's too late in Spain to see much available for today, so no decent comparison; you could check when you first wake up tomorrow, though).

So it appears that waiting until the day of your arrival might cost you just 20-30 euros extra. Perhaps there's someone here who has bought a same-day ticket to Sevilla and remembers what he or she paid. To me, buying in advance is at least that risky. If you pad the schedule a lot, the risk is that everything will go swimmingly on your flight and at Barajas, and you will get to spend a lot of quality time inside the Madrid-Atocha rail station, waiting for your pre-purchased train. Atocha is actually a pleasant place (if you're not in a hurry, it's a bit confusing), but after a night on an airplane, you probably won't care to spend extra time hanging out there. If you are too optimistic in selecting your train time, well, it's obvious: you may have to throw that ticket away and buy a full-fare replacement anyway.

If you opt to buy your Sevilla ticket after arrival, I think you can do that at the airport rail station, which is much to be preferred since Atocha's ticket lines can be more than frustrating.

Is there a chance the AVE trains Madrid to Sevilla could sell out? That would be my concern for waiting until day-of.

Five [edited because apparently I cannot count] of tomorrow's 22 trains are sold out. On four others Turista class is sold out, with only the more expensive Preferente available. (That may be what they call first class.) So there are no guarantees, but most of the problem trains depart early in the morning or in the late afternoon or early evening--not what you want. There are still 75.50-euro tickets available for the 11 AM, 12 PM, 2 PM and 3 PM departures. Also the 10 AM departure, but I don't see how you could possibly make that one unless your flight was wildly early.

I think you're trying to do too much. Barca is out of the way but a highlight of Spain so I'd go there for sure. How important is Granada? Tangier's not that great unless you want to cross the straight and say you've been to Africa. Better to fly to Marrakesh for a few days (that's what we did - also went to Tangier). How about Madrid to Barca to Seville to hill towns (with rental car) and back to Madrid?

Thanks for the responses. It sounds like cutting Tangier is the way to go. I was also going to catch the train to Seville on the day we arrive in Madrid... until I see that the entire week of May 2 - 7 is April Fair. Hotels are double and it sounds like Seville will be crowded. Which also makes me worry that trying to get a train ticket the day-of travel could be an issue.
I feel like I'm making this way more complicated than it should be. Revised itinerary. Definitely open to suggestions.

  1. Flight arrives from US to Madrid in a.m.
  2. Madrid- full day
  3. Madrid or side trip to Segovia or Toledo
  4. Madrid to Barcelona- morning AVE train
  5. Barcelona
  6. Barcelona
  7. Barcelona to Granada - fly
  8. Granada- full day
  9. pick up rental car, drive through Andalucia to Ronda or Grazalema to spend night
  10. drive to Seville
  11. Seville
  12. day trip to Cordoba -- I just found out that the Patio contest will be going on - looks Amazing! Is one day enough?
  13. Seville to Madrid by AVE
  14. Flight Madrid to US

I hate the idea of basically losing 2 sightseeing days by not saving Madrid to the last.
