10- Day Spain Trip - Late October - Engagement Surprise

Hi Everyone,

My girlfriend and I are planning a 10 year anniversary trip to Spain Oct 21-31. We are flying direct into Madrid the morning of 21st and debating on staying the night on traveling by train down south to Seville/Granada. There are two events I am currently trying to plan around, the first is finding a city with amazing views to plan my proposal. I decided on Granada because of the huge castles. Second, I really would love to catch the El Classico match on October 27th but this would force us to cut our time in the south short and travel back to Madrid leaving us with an awkward 3 day gap before we leave. We are planning on using the train passes as much as possible but also want to reduce how often we need to travel with our luggage which is why choosing Granada or Seville as our main hub would allow for day trips around before coming back to Madrid and repeating day trips to Toledo.

Any help would be greatly appreciated in advice for which cities to extend the stay, hidden gem locations for private moments, and tips of securing Madrid tickets :)

Day 1 - Arrive in Madrid (morning) - Train to Seville (Sleep in Seville)

Day 2 - Seville (Sleep in Seville)

Day 3 - Seville - Cordoba (Day Trip) (Sleep in Seville)

Day 4 - Granada (Sleep in Granada)

Day 5 - Granada (Proposal?) (Sleep in Granda)

Day 6 - Granada

Day 7 - Travel to Madrid (El Classico Match) (Sleep in Madrid)

Day 8 - Madrid (Sleep in Madrid)

Day 9 - Toledo Day Trip (Sleep in Madrid)

Day 10 - Madrid (Sleep in Madrid)

Day 11 - Leave Madrid 11 AM

The Alhambra in Granada is a palace, not really a castle. There are a couple castles in the area, but not right in the city. For the places you mentioned, there are some gems, but no hidden gems. They are some of the most visited destinations in the country.

If you wanted a place closer to Madrid for the proposal, with a view, consider one of the overlooks (mirador) in Toledo or a view of Toledo from the Parador there. Another option is Mirador de la Pradera de San Marcos that affords a view of the Alcázar in Segovia. Either would be fairly private and you wouldn’t need to go all the way to Granada, saving you time.

If you’re intent on Granada, then Mirador de San Nicolás affords a good view of the Alhambra complex, but it is popular and could be pretty crowded.
