Salamanca adventures

My husband and I are going to drive along the Douro River (after our Rick Steves tour) and into Spain in July. We are going to stay at Salamanca and use it as a base to explore the area. What are some must see things in Salamanca or cities or attractions in the area that would be good for day trips?

It may be quite hot in that area in July, though certainly not as bad as in Andalucia

I enjoyed a day-trip to the walled town of Ciudad Rodrigo. It's entirely possible the only other tourists you'll see will be Portuguese.

Zamora and Valladolid to the north (which I haven't seen) have been mentioned positively here. Valladolid is a bit farther away than the other two. I haven't checked driving times.

Salamanca has a large historic district that takes a while to cover, and then there's the university. The latter is sometimes closed to visitors because of something on the academic calendar, so if you want to see it, I'd recommend not leaving it till your last day in the city.

If you go to "Watch. Read, Listen" section of this website, Cameron Hewitt's blog Dec. 28th covers Salamanca and also mentioned coverage in updated RS Spain book.
