Madrid Hotel or Apt

First trip to Spain for our mutual retirements! Starting in Madrid. Suggestions of where to stay? Easy access to sights with a neighborhood? This forum stated the Latina neighborhood is nice. We usually stay in boutique hotels or B & B - because it is nice to have recommendations. Thank u!

We have stayed in Hotel Europa several times. It is central to the tourist sites with good restaurants in the area.

We love Palazzo Navona in Madrid, vintage palazzo with a modern interior. Roof top bar. The location is perfect, between Piazza Navona and the Pantheon..

I thought Hotel Europa was great. Loved the location. The hotel staff was helpful and the room was fresh and clean. We felt it was very reasonably priced.

We stayed in a place that was both an apartment AND a hotel (i.e. an aparthotel). It had a lobby and a breakfast, but there was also a mini-kitchenette and a seating area in the room.

The location was good. It was near the palace (we had a view of the palace, in fact), and very close to a metro stop.

La Latina/ Embajadores is where I stay in Madrid. Truly a neighborhood, the area is short on hotels, but if a friend were looking at AirBnBs it would be my top area to recommend. I'd suggest not staying too far south of the Mercado de Cebada, just for the sake of staying more central.

We just stayed at the Radisson Blu Madrid Prado and it was in a perfect location. Across from the Prado, not too far from the train station (for going to Toledo), near the parks and walking distance to many great restaurants and sites. The rate was very good, breakfast very tasty and service was excellent.

Our stay at Hotel Preciados left a lot to be desired. I'm still baffled as to how they can claim to be a four star establishment. Room was very plain with the basic amenities. The biggest issue was with the staff. They were very aloof. Several times we asked them for recommendations, such as restaurants, transit options etc. We received cursory responses and they gave off the vibe of "why are you bothering us?" I would not stay there again.

I concur about the Hotel Europa in central Madrid. It was a wonderful place to stay when I was in Espana in 2014. Do not worry that the hotel is overlooking the Plaza del Sol, which is buzzing with people 24/7. The hotel is acoustically insulated. I didn't hear anyone.

Agree with Craig that noise at Hotel Europa not an issue. I want to add that I really enjoyed being able to open the window and watch what was going on. Terrific hotel.

Just got back home after 4 great nights at Hotel Europa and highly recommend. Room 409, looked over the side street, not the big Plaza del Sol, which may have been slightly quieter. Great 3 star, clean rooms, nice staff, perfect location. We walked everywhere. Grouped museum visits on one day, the Royal Palace on the the other. Enjoyed our evening paseos wandering all around the little streets, dropping into tapas bars, eating gelato. Hotel booked a 4:15 a.m. taxi ride to the airport for our very early flight to SFO. 30 euro 20 minute ride. So EZ!

I stayed in the Catalonia Puerto del Sol in May for 5 nights altogether. I thought it was very convenient to many plazas, the Prado and other museums, Retiro Park and in the other direction to the Royal Palace, and yet it is not too close to these extremely crowded plazas. I've never been to a city that's been as crowded as Madrid is...and not by tourists necessarily, so being slightly removed was good. I walked everywhere I wanted to go, and only used their equivalent of the subway(forgotten what it is called, sorry) to get from the Charmartin Train station. The common areas are charming, has a great breakfast, a bar and the best croissants I have every had, including in France. Melted in my mouth! Traveling solo, I like these features whether I use them or not.

For recent visitors --- Is the crazy Englishman still giving his walking tours? We loved him.

Frank, who is the crazy English man? Rick's book mentions Stephen Drake-Jones. Is that who you are talking about?
