Lodging in Basque Country on a tight budget in Dec/Jan

We visited Spain Basque area and found food and lodging quite reasonable. Can you tell us what cities you plan on staying in? We stayed in San Sebastian and Bilbao. You also might get more responses if you put this under the destination category. The reviews category tends to be people's reviews of properties they've stayed at.

I think in general things won't be too expensive at that time of year, which is not at all peak season for the Basque Country. In the summer San Sebastian is usually notably more expensive than Bilbao.

Last year on the RSE Basque Country tour, the tour ended in Bilbao, and we stayed on for a few more days at the Petit Palace Arana. We really liked this place; the location can't be beat, the staff was delightful, and the breakfast was good. I don't know what your budget is, but our cost averaged about €125 per night. We did sign up for their loyalty club (no charge for that,) which did give us a slight discount.

Should we return to Bilbao, we would not hesitate to stay there again.

In San Sebastian we stayed at Pension Amaiur, It was very well located right in the heart of the old town and pintxos restaurants. Very inexpensive.

In Bilbao we stayed at Hotel ARTETXE. Also very reasonably priced and included breakfast. Spotlessly clean. Above town. We drove about 5 minutes to the funicular that goes into the city. I believe there is a bus that picks up at the hotel and would get you to the funicular.
