In Barcelona, I can recommend Hotel Midmost: https://www.hotelmidmost.com/en . Last year we stayed there for 4 nights in late September. At the time, it was not in the RS Spain book. It is a few minutes walk to the Rambles and a metro station, but far enough away from the crowds. It is a 4 star hotel with a lovely rooftop deck and small pool and a great view of the city. The breakfast is amazing, fresh organic food and juices and we loved the service. We had a room with a small patio.

In Madrid, I have stayed at the Doubletree near the Prado, a 4 star hotel on points: http://doubletree3.hilton.com/en/hotels/spain/doubletree-by-hilton-madrid-prado-MADPRDI/index.html?WT.mc_id=zELWAKN0EMEA1DT2DMH3LocalSearch4DGGenericx6MADPRDI. It is a typical American-style hotel with amazing service and a good location. The other hotels I have stayed in Madrid are either RS hotels or 5-star hotels.

Have a great trip,
Sandy

Our favorite Barcelona hotel is Hotel Jazz. Why? Location- right in the heart of Barcelona. A short walk to the Ramblas and beyond. Situated on a quiet street. Immaculate rooms. Phenomenal breakfast. A fabulous roof top terrace, bar and pool with an amazing panoramic view of the city. Perfect way to end a day of sightseeing! Highly recommended. www.hoteljazz.com.

In Madrid we stayed at the HOTEL PRECIADOS - paid 133-150 euro a night in April 2017 for a 5 day stay. 4* hotel. Great location and also very close to a self service laundry if needed. http://www.preciadoshotel.com/

In Barcelona we very much enjoyed the HOTEL CATALONIA PORTAL DE L’ÀNGEL. Excellent location near Plaça Catalunya, very nice rooms, nice courtyard out back with a small pool, super nice and helpful staff.

In Madrid we really liked The Catalonia Las Cortes. Big comfortable room, great location, free snacks and soft drinks from 2:00 on every afternoon.
