Barcelona and Madrid Hotels

I booked two hotels in Spain pre and post tour using the Spain Guidebook as source. Here are comments on them. Barcelona: Hotel Reding. It is now under the "chicandbasic" hotel group. Near the Universitat metro station, double room was clean, colorful and has what you need without frills, chic and basic! On a side street, away from the noise. "Flax and Kale" next door is a fun and unique eatery. The breakfast buffet is not a large spread, but it is quite adequate. Stayed 4 nights and pleased with the staff as well.
Madrid: Hotel Opera. Across from the Opera house, it does not hold up under a 4 star rating--its best days are in the past. Room was worn and tired, mattresses included. Cleaning needed more attention. Front desk staff helpful. Hotel breakfast offered in a back room, behind the lounge area, not in its restaurant/cafeteria, and was very overpriced for what it offered, definitely not worth the 15 euro per person. Nearby HansoCafe on Los Angeles calle was a great alternative.
