Vrsic Pass to Austria

Has anyone ever taken the Vrsic Pass from Kobarid to Austria (as a day trip) Is there anything to see in that area of Austria for an afternoon? Can one take the pass and have lunch in Austria and then drive back?

Yes, if you don't do any sightseeing in the Soca Valley between Kobarid and the pass on that day, it can be done, but it's best you start early. Depending on the number of stops you make, it can take anything from an hour (no stops) to half a day (stops and hikes) to cross the pass. Once you reach Kranjska Gora, you are 30 minutes from the Austrian border via the Korensko Sedlo/Wurzenpass.

The Worthersee lake with the Pyramidenkogel tower is worth visiting and not too far away. Use the faster Predel Pass to return to Kobarid via Tarvisio, Italy and don't forget to buy the Austrian vignette (toll sticker) for their highways. If you rent in Italy, you will need one for the highways in Slovenia, too.

Perfect! Thanks so much for the information. Is there anything to see in that part of Austria that makes it worth crossing the border? Any charming little towns to get something to eat before we head back?

I think the scenery is most impressive in the Soca valley, Vrsic Pass and Kranjska Gora area. Over the border Austria is fine, but a little dull compared to what you will have just travelled through.
