Venice from Ljubljana after the tour?

Hi, we're looking for ideas on the best way to get to Venice after our RS Tour ends in Ljubljana.

Any thoughts and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Bus will be faster than train because the latter requires a detour to Austria. Bus is likely also to be cheaper. European buses are usually very comfortable. The busbud website is one source for bus schedules on that route. Also check DRD Turizm.

The company Go Opti runs shuttles--some scheduled, some not--that can be quite expensive. Definitely check for online reviews concerning reliability.

In all cases, be sure you're looking at buses/shuttles going to the city of Venice rather than the airport.

When checking for information on schedules, day of week is critical, and possibly also time of year. Be sure to check the correct date, or as close as you can get (including day of week) if the online schedule for your date isn't yet available.

Cross-border buses can sell out. I don't see any need to buy a ticket now (assuming you're not traveling soon), but don't wait until the day of travel.

If you're willing to tackle a more complex trip, take a look at this 2014 webpage that describes how to:

  • Take a bus to Nova Goriza, cross the border to Gorizia by local bus or taxi, then take an Italian train to Venice. Or
  • Take a train to Sezana, cross the border to Trieste by bus or taxi, then take an Italian train to Venice.

Me, I'd just go with a direct bus.

Thank you Philip - yes, this is very helpful! I do like the GoOpti idea. Have you tried any of these yourself?

Thank you acraven - good point about the destination - city over the Venice airport. I will give your links a check as well, and yes agreed, bus or shuttle does look to be the best way to go. Bus most likely the cheapest option - thank you again!

We used GoOpti in September 2016 to travel from Mestre train station to Ljubljana. The website was easy to explore- various options for pickup/ drop off times, locations in city. Received an email as promised day before travel confirming the pickup details, closer to pickup time received name of driver, phone number and vehicle license number. Driver was on time, pleasant and professional. Would definitely use GoOpti again- hassle free, important to us as was the final piece of a long day of travel.

Another potential bus option is Flixbus, which started operating the Ljubljana - Venice route earlier this year. I have also used Go Opti, no complaints regarding the service, very professional and good value for money, especially if booked early enough.
