I am thinking of going to Trieste for a few days over Easter next year. I live in the Bologna area 1/2 the year so I am continuing to visit more places in Italy and nearby countries. A friend has suggested that I go to Postumia and or Ljubljana for a couple of days. Is this possible by either bus or train? Do you recommend it? Thanks for any suggestions.
Rome2Rio.com is a good place to start
Linda, it’s possible to do it by bus and from September of this year onwards also by train. To prevent any confusion, note that “Postumia” is in Italian, the Slovene name is Postojna. The latter is also the most widely used version of the name in English.
I was just in Trieste, Postonja and Ljubljana a week ago!
Enjoyed Trieste very much, fun town to walk around, beautiful view of the Adriatic (except for the container ships!), a couple of noteworthy museums, very good restaurants...there are beaches about 1/2 hour to the west.
Postonja was surprisingly good. I thought it would be kitschy, but it wasn't - the cave is immense and stunning (to someone who has never been to a cave before!). a very good 2 hour visit. If you go think about adding nearby Predjama castle also - another 2 hours.
Ljubljana is a delight - easy to walk around - lots of very nice places to eat, drink, people watch. A good 1 to 2 day town; people have mentioned this before and I agree: it is Prague before the tourists.
Have no clue about train or bus service - I had a rental car and the drive was easy - I think Ljubljana is no more than 2 hours from Trieste, Postonja less.
