We debark from a cruise in Trieste, Italy the beginning of May and are then travelling to Ljubljana, Slovenia for 3 days. What is the best and shortest way to get to Slovenia from Trieste, Italy cruise port, to rent a car in Slovenia to then drive the rest of the way to Ljubljana?
The GoOpti shuttle can take you from the Trieste port to Ljubljana for a fairly inexpensive price if you are planning to drive straight to Ljubljana. You could skip the care rental altogether OR rent a car once you are in Ljubljana if you want a rental car there. https://www.goopti.com/en/
You could also catch the GoOpti shuttle to Koper to rent a car within Slovenia -- a little out of the way but not terrible.
By the way... welcome to the forum!
Thank you so much for the welcome and answer.
I think the 'get to Koper' option is what we are looking for. We take a lot of road trips, so like to drive and discover, whenever and where ever we can. Plus, the car train sounds like something I need to do!
Do you have a specific car rental agency you recommend?
I used Hertz in 2019, but I get frequent flyer miles for using Hertz. Everything went fine. The guy who rented me the car spoke great English. It looks like Sixt rents cars at Koper, too. I have used them in the past and liked them.
Also... I loved the Motorail, but I love all things transportation. When I rode it in 2019, I arrived early at the Most na Soči station to scope out how things are done. The way it was done then was that the car in the first parking spot by the asphalt ramp to the tracks on the left end of the parking lot was the first one on the train. So, if rules haven't changed and if you want an unobstructed view at the front of the train, arrive early and park in the first parking spot by the ramp on the left side of the parking lot.
After the guy who arrived after me parked in the first spot, I parked in the second spot. I was number two even though I arrived first (sad face). But it was still fun even in the #2 spot! The fee was collected at the car before driving on the train.
