Anyone have any suggestions on best way to travel from Budapest to Ljubljana Slovenia? Booked back to back Prague to Budapest RS tour and Best of the Adriatic RS tours.
In 2019, we used MyDaytrip.com and we couldn't have been more pleased. While it's expensive, it is SO easy and pleasant compared to the public transportation options.
That is one of those trips that looks easy on the map but will take a while no matter how you do it. There are direct trains between the cities, but they take 7:30. Flixbus is a bit faster, but lacks the comfort of a train.
Whereas, it's about four a half hours by car. We made just one stop, for a sandwich and restrooms, but MyDayTrip offers sightseeing stops along the way also, if you're interested.
Although the train is longer, I'd be tempted to take it. One way to break up the journey if you have a spare night in between might be to get off a few hours before Ljubljana say in Ptuj, a tiny old town in eastern Slovenia (and the oldest town in Slovenia I think) that's probably not part of your tour, and spend time there. Depending on how quick of a traveler you are, you could either spend the night there or just a few hours and stop for the night in another town like Maribor or Celje before heading on to Ljubljana. Then you could get a taste of eastern Slovenia.
