travel to Slovenia from Budapest

We will be travelling to Budapest in early June and spending 3 days having fun there. We will then travel to Slovenia for 10 days, returning to Budapest for our flight home. While in Slovenia, we intend to rent a car. Our research shows us that it is cheaper to rent a car in Slovenia than in Hungary. We are now thinking of taking a train from Budapest to Maribor and renting our car there, returning it to Maribor and taking the train back to Budapest. Again our research shows that there is a non stop train from Budapest to Maribor that takes about 6 hours but we cannot find the cost. So is it really cheaper to rent a car in Slovenia, how can we get more information about the train, does anyone know anything about Izzirent. Thanks any information would be helpful.

Obviously you can check the cost of renting a car in Budapest vs. renting it in Maribor (varies by the date not just location of course). I use Kayak.com for example to check rental car rates.

I don't know what the cost of the train ticket is between Budapest and Maribor - I'd guess $80 USD per person or so, but I'm really not sure. But of course, you have to ask what the extra cost of renting the car (an extra day? Two days?) and the extra cost of gas.

The other question is: is there anything to see of interest on the drive from Budapest to Maribor? I haven't driven between the two cities; maybe it's a pretty drive or something.

The other obvious question is: do you HAVE to return to Budapest from Slovenia? Can you fly into Budapest and fly home out of another city like Venice? If you could do that, you could rent the car in Maribor, drop it in Ljubljana or somewhere near Piran, then get to Venice (by bus; easy train from Trieste, Italy to Venice)? That might save you the time of driving all the way back to Budapest or even Maribor and may not cost you much more - may even save you some money.
