travel to Sarajevo from Plitvice or Dubrovnik?

We are going to Slovenia and Croatia in the fall for 3 weeks. We would also like to go into Bosnia and Montenegro. Will it be better to go to Sarajevo overland from Plitvice or travel down the coast of Croatia to Dubrovnik and go up from there? If we went overland, we would probably fly to Rome from Split and, therefore, miss the upper coast of Croatia. Is that a bad thing, or will the southern coast suffice?

We will be spending a couple of days on Korcula. Will we miss something by skipping Trogir and staying in Skradin instead?

Also, how difficult is it to drive on the southern part of Croatia? I know that driving in Dubrovnik is a pain. Is it possible to park the car somewhere for a few days outside of the city? Or should we turn in the car and rely on public transportation to get to Korcula and Split?

I drove from Plitvice to Sarajevo a few years ago. I took the route through Bosnia (M5 to E761). The scenery was beautiful. I stopped in Bihac for about an hour, and in Jajce for two hours including lunch. (After Plitvice that might not impress you so much!)

The roads are good but it's not a fast route. There was very little traffic, but they are two-lane roads for the most part. And if you're gawking at the scenery as much as I did, you'll want to take it slow. Allow most of a day if you stop along the way. I think. I think it took about 8 or 9 hours with stops.

The drive from Sarajevo south to Mostar is even more beautiful!

I can't answer the rest of your questions, as I drove from Mostar to Trogir, spent the night there, and then dropped my car in Split the next day before taking a ferry to Hvar.

Thanks for your replies. I've been really busy but am now ready to get this planned. Tryker, I know it's crazy but at this point, we are flying to Milan. We had originally planned to lease a car there and drive, but now we may not get the car until we are in Rovinj. We plan to see Istria and Slovenia, then Plitvice Lakes. From there we will either go down to Split or inland to Sarajevo. We could also get to Sarajevo by way of Split and then down to Mostar, Montenegro, and Dubrovnik. We also want to spend some time on Korcula. What route do you think is best to get all this in? We have about 24 days. I'd love anybody's input. Thanks!
