Travel ideas post RS Central Europe tour - Coastal Croatia + Bosnia? Montenegro?

Hey Fellow Travelers,

We're booked on a RS Central Europe Prague to Slovenia tour in Oct 2026.

We're interested in adding 6-10 days in the Coastal Croatia, Bosnia & / or Montenegro area.

Have others done this? and if so, any itinerary type ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks - Fellow Travel.

With 6 to 10 days the choice is Croatia with maybe a side trip up to Mostar. You must see Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik but beyond that there are all sorts of options that really depend on your interests. For instance Nature, then Plitvice and Kravica falls. Food and drink there are a number of good wineries some with accommodation and an olive plantation can br a very interesting experience. For sport kayaking, sea and river fishing, hiking. Cultural might call for an extra day in Split and Dubrovnik and a trip to the Blagaj Tekija monastery. Village tourism ... ???

How late in October, cause October is getting marginal for coastal fun and the cities become more important. If you agree then Split, Dubrovnik, Mostar, Sarajevo, home works out to 10 days. Its probably what I would do in late October. There are a good number of options for sight seeing stops inbetween the cities. But im clicking on a phone and too much spelling to look up unless you are interested.

So that ends in Bled, close to Ljubljana, so I would first determine actual number of days. With ten, I’d consider heading to southern Croatia, but with six, I’d probably stick to northern Croatia.
What is the end date? The weather tends to change in October. I’d risk a coastal trip in early October, but after mid October, I’d stick to interior areas or larger towns. Make sense?
I would strongly suggest perusing a guide book to see what appeals to you, and then post a rough plan here to get feedback.
You can easily see one place in each country since they abut each other, but it really just comes down to what you want to see and do.

For further clarification - we'll be ending our tour in Bled Oct 16th.

Building a plan that starts in Ljubljana ending in Dubrovnik with stops to include Split / Hvar / Mostar / Dubrovnik is starting to take shape!

Input is a car is best transport method ( 1 way drop off from Ljubljana to Dubrovnik )

more to come !
Thanks travel friends!

Make sure that you won't have a huge drop-off fee for returning the car in a different country. It's probably worth it to pick the car up in Croatia to avoid it.

Beginning the extra on 16 October, if it were me, without a doubt this would be a city tour like I described. As for car rental if you just had to drive it would be Zagreb to Dubrovnik, the rest with a bus or a private transfer. Even with private transfers all the way its might be no more per day than a RS tour. BiH is fairly cheap and Croatia may not be too bad in October.

Hi DMJohnson,

I'm also on the Central Europe Tour from Oct 2-16. I will be touring around Ljubljana after the tour for a couple of days. I noticed that starting this year, RS took Ljubljana off the itinerary, and replaced it with Lipica and Radovljica, for horses and beekeeping for whatever reason.

I've seen people doing Central Europe and Adriatic back to back, but they repeat in Ljubljana, Bled, Rovinj and Plitvice. See you on Oct 2 in Prague.

If you need to get to Croatia to pick up a rental car for reasons of cost, you'll find both trains and buses linking Ljubljana and Zagreb. They're both nice cities and quite different.

I'd echo Mr. E's caution about weather. Fall will probably have arrived by the time your tour ends, and you might have chilly/wet days. I don't think temperatures will be very low (if you're not at altitude), but if you get soaked to the skin, as I did in Zagreb around October 10, 2015, it may not be pleasant. I suspect--but have not researched this--temperatures would be a bit warmer along the coast, but the smaller towns might not have much going on. Zagreb has quite a lot of museums.

Thank you for these posts & comments.
Yes - any car would be rented in Croatia ( to avoid the drop off charge when originating in Slovenia ).
No - we haven't dug into the weather but will do so ( appreciate this local knowledge ).
Yes - We'll consider other options departing from Ljubljana to other areas in Europe
Fellow RS Traveler - See you in Prague!
