Travel from Ljubljana to Trieste

This September, after cycling through Slovenia we will need to get from Ljubljana to Trieste where we are staying for a night. We want to see the Skocjan caves along the way. Because we will have our luggage with us we are not considering public transportation. I inquired with a guide service about a private tour and transport, but the price seems high--350 euros for a half day. Alternatively we could rent a car one-way but this is also expensive. Any thoughts?

Where are you going after Trieste? Rent a car from Sixt and stay in Piran instead of Trieste. Return the car in Koper and then move on to your next destination.

There are luggage lockers at the train station in Divaca, so you could go by public transport. Otherwise, I like Emily's idea. Rent in Ljubljana, return in Koper or Piran, depending on the company, and then take a bus (or even a taxi) just across the border into Trieste.
