After our 15 day Eastern Europe trip we would like to go on to Vienna. Can anyone recommend the best means of transportation, train or bus? We’d prefer to travel during the day. Can you suggest a train line or bus company and suggest where to pick this up? Our end goal is to arrive at the central station in Vienna. Thank you.
Looks like the train (several a day) connects in Villach or Maribor and takes about six hours. I haven't taken this exact route but have taken the train between Maribor and Ljubljana. Pretty ride in parts. The Maribor-Vienna train is probably pretty too.
There's also a direct bus that takes about five hours e.g. Flixbus.
Some people (like me) love trains and would take the train almost for sure, but some people don't care for bus vs. train either way. I'm sure the Flixbus would be fine. I doubt I would enjoy it like I would the train ride.
There is a direct train that departs Ljubljana at 16:05 arriving in Vienna at 22:02: https://www.bahn.com/en.
Yes, direct but arrives at 10pm. It's about the same travel time with just a quick layover/connection to take an earlier train and get to Vienna at a decent time.
This article explains in detail the four train options - https://www.seat61.com/international-trains/trains-from-Ljubljana.htm#Ljubljana-Vienna
Whatever you do, do not use Rail Europe to buy your tickets as this is a third party reseller that doesn’t operate the trains and their prices are inflated.
I have also taken FlixBus, the company that serves this route. Kinda grubby, in my opinion.
We've gone from Vienna to Slovenia on the train. I'd do that over the bus, because on the train you can walk around and use the bathroom. I've taken Flixbus also and have never found the buses to be dirty. They are clean and new.
Hi Carol. We just did this a few weeks ago. See the posts around 8/26 and my responses on those posts. Train left Ljubljana station about 8am, easy connection in Maribor; arrived in Vienna at 2 pm, very pleasant and scenic journey. We bought our tix the night before on bahn.de website.
