Transportation from Lake Bohinj to Vršič Pass

Hi all - my wife and I are visiting Slovenia in early-mid Sep. We are planning a multi day hike from Vršič Pass to Lake Bohinj. We are parking our car at the Vršič Pass but will need to get back from Lake Bohinj after completing the hike. We have obtained some information from the arriva.si website, but it seems that it would take 3 bus changes (Bohinj-Lesce ZP-Kranjska Gora-Vršič Pass). There were some bus timings but they didnt look very frequent. Wondered if anyone may have additional information sources? Or how much a taxi might cost? many thanks

There is bus service to the Vrsic Pass from Bohinjska Bistrica via other towns through the end of September. Bohinjska Bistrica is the main service town near Lake Bohinj. It, in turn, has bus service to the lakeside villages of Ribcev Laz ( 3.5 miles away) and Ukanc (6.5 miles away).

Thank you - do you know if there is a web link showing schedule for the bus from Bohinjska Bistrica to Vrsic Pass? I was not able to find one

No direct bus, so you have to make connections through various routes. The least number of connections is Bohinjska Bistrica to Bled and then Bled to Vrsic Pass. The bus company’s website is www.nomago.si/en. Questions can be directed to [email protected]. You also can take the train from Bohinjska Bistrica to Bled and bus from there.
How long will your trek be from Vrsic Pass to Bohinj?

Hi Kenko - it is 5 days (Sep 9-13):
1. Vršič Pass to Pogačnikov dom na Kriških podih
2. Pogačnikov dom na Kriških podih to Koča na Doliču
3. Koča na Doliču to Triglav and back
4. Koča na Doliču to Koča pri Triglavskih Jezerih
5. Koča pri Triglavskih Jezerih to Stara Fužina

We have all the hut bookings but can cancel if necessary. If getting back to Vršič is too difficult, an alternative we are considering is staring from Vrata Valley from where we can also hike to Pogačnikov dom na Kriških podih on day 1. I think that is closer to Lake Bohinj so easier to get back after we finish on day 5.

Are you familiar with these hiking routes?

Hi Vijay, It looks like you’re in luck because Nomago will continue 3 buses per day until September 15 ( so September 13 and 14 is good). taking 30 minutes to go from Kranjska Gora to the Vrsic Pass. They depart from Kranjska Gora at 9:35, 11:35 and 16:30.

You can take the train or bus from Bohinjska Bistrica to Bled and then the bus from Bled to Kranjska Gora. It takes about 2:15 from BB to KG.

Taxis take about 90 minutes and reportedly cost around €120 from Bohinj to Vrsic Pass. Your hotel in Stara Fuzina might find you one for less.

Enjoy!

Hi Kenko - can i ask where did you find this information? When I go to nomago.si for Sep 13, I find only one bus from Kransjka Gora to Vršič at 11.35am (time unfortunately doesnt work for us) and nothing on Sep 12?

The 3x daily schedule was on Nomago’s site earlier with “Erjavceva koca” as the destination for the Vrsic Pass.
I suspect they may have reduced their schedule due to reduced demand they are seeing as Europeans are cutting back on their vacations this summer.
You could phone Nomago at the customer service number on the website. Otherwise, it looks like a taxi may be the way to go.

Yes I think we will need to take a taxi from KG to Vrsic Pass. I have contacted a couple of taxi companies and they are quoting Even and E60 respectively which seems excessive given it is only a few km. Rome2Rio estimates it as E15-20. Do any of you know a company that might be more reasonably priced?

The Kranjska Gora tourist website has the 2025 timetable for the Vršič Pass services and the 11:35 service runs also on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays until September 30, so you can take the 11:35 service on September 13 but not on September 12. If hiking from the Triglav Lakes to Stara Fužina, you would have to start quite early to catch the bus indeed. As I understand, you have two options to do the whole route by public transport, both available on September 13 and 14:

Option A is to do an early start and hike from Triglav Lakes to the Vogar/Blato junction (GPS location 46.306958, 13.853602) in time to catch the 07:55 departure of line 4 of the Bohinj local bus to the train station in Bohinjska Bistrica (also stops in Stara Fužina but it is a longer hike), then take the 08:53 train straight to Jesenice and transfer to the 10:01 bus for Kranjska Gora and then the 11:35 bus over Vršič Pass.

Option B. Alternatively, you can aim for a later departure and catch the 11:55 train from Bohinjska Bistrica to Most na Soči, arriving at 12:35, where there is a bus departing to Tolmin at the same time, from where you can transfer to a 13:30 bus to Bovec and then in Bovec catch the 15:30 bus over Vršič Pass. As the bus from Most na Soči station is scheduled to depart at the same time as the train arrives, I would suggest asking Nomago, the bus company, whether the 12:35 bus waits for the train, which might be the case if it is a local bus route between the train station and Tolmin. If not you could catch a taxi to Tolmin as it is a rather short distance in a populated area.

Thanks very much. I think the best option for us is as follows:
Sep 13: Finish hike at Lake Bohinj and take arriva.si bus to Radovjlika (where we are staying for following 4 nights)
Sep 14: Take bus from Radovjlica-Lesce ZP (or walk) and connect to 10.41a bus from Lesce ZP to Kranjska Gora. arriving at 11.28a. Then take the 11.35a bus to Vršič Pass and pick up our car

Do you think 7 mins will be enough to change buses in Kranjska Gora? Is it the same bus stand?

The 10.41 bus from Lesce ZP will have stopped in Radovljica at 10.36 as it is a bus route originating in Ljubljana/Kranj, so no need to walk to Lesce. Given that it is a very long bus route, I would not be comfortable leaving just 7 minutes of wiggle room should there be any delays on the road. As the two buses are run by different companies, they are unlikely to wait in case of delays. Best to take the earlier 9:36 departure from Radovljica and have a coffee in Kranjska Gora while you wait for the bus over Vršič Pass. The bus stations are tiny so transfers are easy.

Hello - we have decided to change day 1 of our hike and start at Vrata Valley (from where transporation is easier) rather than Vrisic Pass. We will still end day 1 at Pogačnikov dom so days 2 to 5 are unchanged. Thanks to you all for your very helpful advice.
