Train travel from Ljublijana to major cities in Western Europe

Ljublijana, Slovenia is our last stop on our tour. Flights home to Detroit from that location are 16-20 hours. I would like to take a train to an airport in Western Europe, stay the night and fly out the next day to break up the trip. Does anyone know what major airports can be reached via train from Ljublijana?

Well, if your goal is to save time, trains are probably not going to do it. It will
take hours to get from Ljubljana to any major city, closest probably Vienna.
Zagreb is much closer and may help your air itinerary, but may not.

Ljubljana to Milan, for example, is 10 hours+ by train. Munich, around 7.

I would consult the Ljubljana Airport website and see what airlines serve it and
look for non-stop flights from there to say, Frankfurt, Vienna, Paris, etc. A hub
that can get you a non-stop back to Detroit are presumably preferable.

Venice is three hours from Ljubljana and there are frequent express buses making the journey. No trains run between the two cities. Zagreb— the capital of Croatia which is now an EU member—is three train hours from Ljubljana.

You can get to any airport in Western Europe by train from Ljubljana -- eventually! But as noted you will be traveling a long time to get anywhere that has a nonstop flight to Detroit. I doubt Venice or Zagreb will get you closer to home as you still would likely have to connect from there in another European airport. I flew home from Ljubljana from a tour in late 2023, to Washington DC, and the connection was with Lufthansa through Munich.

Looks like Ljubljana to Munich is around 6 hours with one change of train. The Munich airport has a non-stop flight daily during high season and less-than-daily during off season.
