Planning four days in the Julian Alps in September from a base in/around Kobraid. We are looking for some middle ground activities between just a car ride and a full on adventure hiking/kayaking/rock climbing etc. We love one- to two-hour hikes to interesting sights and activities - especially if they are associated with great meals. Any suggestions on where to go and what to see?
You will definitely want to check out the Kobarid Historical Trail (https://kobariski-muzej.si/en/guided-tours/the-kobarid-historical-trail/).
Also not far from Kobarid is Tolmin Gorge (https://www.soca-valley.com/en/attraction/tolmin-gorges/). When I was in Slovenia about 10 years ago, Vintgar Gorge was closed because of damage it had sustained during winter floods. So I settled for Tolmin Gorge. Only it didn't feel like settling. It was wonderful.
Thanks Lane, we appreciate the tips!
I would also give my endorsement to the Kobarid Historial Trail and Tolmin Gorge. Both are great.
If you would like to spend a day with a guide doing local activities, Vesna is great. I spent a couple of days with her and found them to be very worthwhile. One day was doing easy hikes around the Soča Valley https://slocally.com/
Thanks Dave. I read your report from your time a few years ago. Full of good info! We plan on at least one day self-driving but would be nice to have someone else in charge:) Your guide is now on our list!
I have never been there yet, but Lake Bohinj/Bohinjsko jezero is on my list.
Thank you for the suggestion. We have been there, specifically for the Cow Ball. A tremendous experience in a beautiful setting!
What did you think about Lake Bohinj/Bohinjsko?
It was just Lake Bohinj, and just for the annual Cow Ball, an event I poo-poohed at the beginning. It was tremendous. Not easy to get to via public transportation from Ljubljana at the time (2019) but so worth it! Amazing cultural event. Local food, drinks, music, dress, and then the decorated bovines!! An event not to be missed in a gorgeous mountain setting.
