We will have four full days in Ljubljana from September 9-12, leaving on 9/13. We are planning on doing several day trips, including Lake Bled, driving the Julian Alps, visiting some caves, etc. Is it reasonable to do the lake Bled area from Ljubljana or is it better for us to spend one night in that area, and then the rest of the time day tripping from Ljubljana? Distance wise it looks reasonable to do it all as day trips but distance doesn’t always tell the whole story.
We will spend some time there as well- I just took that for granted. Thanks for checking.
Bled is maybe 30 miles from Ljubljana, so it can be a day trip.
But I think doing the Julian Alps as a day trip is not doing it justice. To
drive it, you are going to drive right by Bled, Kobarid, Postojna, and near
Skocjan. Driving past those places and then coming back to do them as
day trips is redundant and inefficient. I'd (because this is what I did)
consider taking a day or two to do the drive. Bled, Kranjska Gora,
Kobarid, and Bovec are all places you could stay along the way.
Agree with shoeflyer's comments, but also - all this depends on your interests / plan / travel style. Are you just checking them off the list, or do you like to linger / savor? For Bled, you can 'see' the town and lake in a couple of hours. But do you want to... walk around the lake? Do the chair lift / luge rides? Visit the castle? Do Vintner Gorge? Rent bikes (do electric - it's hilly!)?
I did a day trip via public bus to Bled from Ljubljana, and felt like a day was enough. If you were keen on swimming there or some such it might be worth the night, but idk. I’d 100% skip the boat out to the island. That was… pretty lame and took about an hour all told.
Thanks for all your help- we appreciate your experience and advice!
We did a day trip to Bled and had a great day and a nice taste of Bled, though I wouldn't have minded an overnight to have more time there. I loved the boat trip. It's expensive and rushed, but it was lovely and I was glad I did it.
