Slovenia - West to East

I am currently living in Southern Austria and am considering spending some time after New Year in Slovenia (~1st-5th Jan). I know I would like to start my trip in the Lake Bled area and my final stop will be Maribor. I have been to Ljubljana before so would not be interested in going there again.

My current plan is:
1st - train to Lake Bled and stay 2 nights (also interested in Kranj, Skofja Loka)
3rd - somewhere in the middle?
4th- train to Maribor and stay (also want to see Ptuj)
5th or 6th - travel home

I imagine for a lot of people this is rushed but I really want to make the most of my time living so centrally in Europe.

Anyway, my question is, does anyone have any recommendations for somewhere to stay in between Bled and Maribor that is accessible by public transport and ideally has a youth hostel or somewhere inexpensive to stay?

Thank you in advance!

You could stay in Kranj and visit Skofja Loka or Kamnik and have more time in Lake Bled to visit Radovljica or Lake Bohinj. Heck, you could stay in Ljubljana and visit those places from there, too. Otherwise, the only place that I can think of that is along public transport routes between Bled and Maribor that isn’t Ljubljana is Celje. Novo mesto is nicer than Celje IMO but getting from there to Maribor won’t be easy (and don’t trust Google Maps for public transport connections, it has been outdated for years).
