Slovenia vs Slovakia--a week without advance planning

Hello:

I have a free week at the end of August in between two work events. I will depart from Berlin and fly Swiss Air via Zurich. Later in mid-September, my current schedule sends me back to Berlin and then to Warsaw. I am trying to chill in another country that has the following characteristics:

Safety--no country is safe from terrorism anymore, but there are ones that have a much lower chance of being attacked than others. I am also paranoid of theft, though I am a frequent traveler without mobility issues.

Lower costs--I find Switzerland to be super expensive. Germany is cheaper but Poland is even better. I would like to save some $ while I travel and not have to worry about a second mortgage.

Good internet connections--this is a must because I need to check work email constantly and rely on Google Maps for directions. Wifi connections in hotels and wireless data connections MUST be good. I love Greek islands but their internet connections are almost always poor. So, Greece is out of consideration.

Good transit--I’d rather not drive, though I have my international driving permit with me. Frequent and reliable public transit is highly desirable.

Reasonably good food...I suppose this is on everybody’s wish list. I travel to Switzerland often for work, but find the food there to be outrageously priced and skimpy in portions. Would like a change from this. Also, some of my travelmates have digestive and metabolic health issues. So, places offering a healthier diet with abundant leafy vegetables (vs. red meat + potatoes in Germany) would be beneficial.

Good coffee--my travel companions are coffee snobs (third wave coffee). Of course, I understand that great coffee is harder to find in more remote locations.

Milder summer weather--I am used to hot, dry weather. Humidity is uncomfortable to me. Also, I experienced a heatwave in Europe before and it was unbearable (few places have A/C). No place can be immune from this, but I would like to avoid it as much as I can.

So far, I am thinking of Slovenia and Slovakia, which are both under the radar for mass tourism (at least for Americans) and cruises. I haven’t been to either.

Slovenia is nice because there are the Alps in the north and the Med coast. It’s a small enough country that I can visit both zones in a short amount of time without much advance planning. My biggest reservation is that hotels in Ljubljana seem to be ultra pricey, especially without advance booking. Many say that it’s even more expensive than in Vienna. I did my search for places with free wifi, a gym, and air conditioning--there isn’t much left. Perhaps it’s because major chains haven’t really expanded into this capital city yet.

Slovakia is also a smaller country. I heard that Bratislava is a pretty cool city. It’s an inland country but offers some unspoiled natural landscape to explore. Some spa towns look interesting.

Which of these two places fulfill the above criteria better? I am used to traveling in Europe and am OK healthwise. Life has been incredibly busy lately and I don’t have much time to plan. Would like to explore places before they become overcrowded and overpriced like Prague.

Thanks a million!

They are both safe. Slovakia is cheaper. They both have good internet connection. Public transport is good. Slovakia has better saturation with railroad. Food is somewhat similar but you can get healthy food in both. Coffee - Ljubljana would win over Bratislava. Milder weather is in Slovakia - farther north. Ljubljana and Bratislava are not big cities. I consider Ljubljana prettier. Slovenia has Alps, Slovakia High Tatras (and many other mountains) which I call condensed Alps. Regardless if you decide for Slovenia or Slovakia you will not regret.

I'm going to focus on Slovenia more as I'm more familiar with it, but I have visited Slovakia on two occasions and find it to be a lovely country.

Overall, both countries are safe, both are cheap, although Slovakia is cheaper. Both will be cheaper than what you are used to, though. Internet is fine in Slovenia, but I'm sure it's good in Slovakia, too. 4G is ubiquitous in Slovenia.

Coffee is better in Slovenia (arguably) and the food is indeed more varied, although my Slovak experience is limited, but the food that I ate was mostly of the hearty Central European variety. We have loads of that in Slovenia, too, but I think the Mediterranean/Italian influences on our food might suit you better. Wines are great in both countries, though. For coffee in Ljubljana, check out this link: https://europeancoffeetrip.com/wake-up-and-smell-ljubljanas-coffee/ - Cafetino, Cokl and TOZD are my favourites.

True, but Ljubljana is by no means more expensive than Vienna. If you are looking for places that are under the radar when it comes to American tourists, you will have to be flexible when it comes to American-style amenities in hotels. Most if not all hotels will have wifi and A/C, it's just the gym that is quite rare. There are loads of gyms in the city, though, so if you could compromise on that point, you could find something more easily. That said, it is last-minute and August, so vacancies are limited. There are a few larger chain properties in Ljubljana - Radisson Blu, Austria Trend and Four Points by Sheraton. All three are on the outskirts of town, though. The only one in the city centre is the five-star InterContinental, which is opening this week. I am not sure what your budget is, but the Grand Union in the city centre is a nice historical property. If you are fine with self-catering, I would look into an AirBnB. The bus system in Ljubljana is good and the city is great for cycling.

Ljubljana does not have to be expensive, hotel-wise. We have a double room at the Best Western right downtown in mid-September for €138.

In light of all your demands, ie these preferences, I would choose Poland and the Czech Rep, away form the big cities like Prague. Based on my own experience and that of another I know who is currently making fifth trip in Poland, that country appears to satisfy your expectations. If you want to get away from the crowds, go elsewhere in the CR than Prague....Brno, Ostrava, Olomouc, Plzen, Cheb, etc.

True about the lack of AC. You put up with them, , the heat and humidity, if the locals can do that, so can you. I've put up with that baking ,beaming, oppressive heat in Vienna, Paris, Prague, etc since the other alternative, that of not going over simply because of the heat is not an option. At the end of August you can reasonably expect east central Europe to still be a broiler.

Just a note for your planning...don't go to Lake Bled anytime between Sept. 4 - 11. The World Master's Rowing Championships are being held there and it will be madness! 4700 of us are rowing from 860 clubs around the world...we are going to have fun but I feel bad for anyone who doesn't know about it and tries to come see the lake. Lodging in town and the surrounding area is completely booked.
