Hi all, we are family of 4 (with a 12 year old and 3 year old kids) visiting Slovenia for the first time over Christmas period.
Our current itinerary looks like this:
23 Dec - arriving in Ljubljana
24 & 25 Dec - exploring Ljubljana. Any must do on Christmas eve or Christmas day?
26 Dec - Lake Bled overnight.
27 Dec - Kranskja Gora overnight.
28 Dec - back to Ljubljana and day trip to Postojna cave and Predjama Castle. We could also do the cave and castle on 24th instead of 28th.
29 Dec - depart Slovenia.
How is driving to Lake Bled and Kranskja Gora in late December or should we use public transport? Is it easy to hire a car on 26th December or will shops be closed?
Any other suggestions greatly welcome. Thank you.
I personally would want to have fewer lodging changes. I would think about Ljubljana first, then Bled for a couple of nights (with a day trip to Kranskja Gora as opposed to an overnight there). If you are flying in and out of Ljubljana's airport, the distance from Bled and from the city center of Ljubljana to the airport is about the same -- around 30 minutes.
Traffic from all the visitors can make things go slow in Bled during the summer -- I don't know what it is like around Christmas. The roads themselves are good and easy for driving.
Thanks Dave. We wanted the kids to experience overnight in snow, hence, the stay in Kranskja Gora. It's likely we'll pack a smaller suitcase and leave our large luggages back in Ljubljana.
We'll be catching a bus at the end of the trip to Zagreb.
