Hi all we’re planning a trip to Slovenia, we’ll be arriving in Ljubljana. We are hoping to spend around 9 days in total in Slovenia & Croatia. We want to visit lake bled, postnja caves & castle, skopija Loka town, and then go to plitvice lakes, down to split and then Dubrovnik. We will be travelling from nz so want to pack as much in as we can. Are we best renting a car at Ljubljana and dropping it back there, then picking up another car - maybe at Zagreb and drop in Dubrovnik? Or use public transport? But I don’t see how you can easily get from plitvice lakes to split without a car? TIA
Depends on what you mean by "best".
Keeping the car is the most efficient time-wise, but, if you rent in Slovenia and return
in Croatia, you will incur a very (potentially very very) high dropoff charge since you
are returning the car in a different country than you rented it from. So financially,
yes, dropping the car in Ljubljana, taking the bus to Zagreb, and re-renting in Zagreb
is the best option. Zagreb is worth a night.
There is bus service between Split and Plitvice (and Zagreb), but you'd want to arrange
lodging and timing to fit, as it's not all that frequent. Most likely you'd want to stay at the
main hotels adjoining the park.
I did a trip very similar to this in 2024. I would recommend if possible flying into Zagreb and picking up your rental car there, that way when you return it in Dubrovnik you'll only have one rental car instead of two, which should be cheaper and you don't have to worry about the extra fees for returning a car in a different country. I used Active Car Rental and had a good experience with them. There was a charge to take the car into Slovenia (less than $100 US).
