Slovenia Advice, recommendations and suggestions

Hi,

I am planning to visit Ljubljana and take day trips to Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj, Piran and Postojna Cave and Pedjama Castle in July 2026

I wanted to ask if anyone has any advice, recommendations or suggestions about places that I must visit and must not miss and anywhere to eat at or just any general recommendations and suggestions?

Thanks

Ljubljana: The Ljubljana Yum food tour is very good -- excellent food with a bit of a tour of the city. I loved it. https://ljubljananjam.si/

Lake Bled: Vintgar Gorge is cool to walk -- best to do early before it gets crowded.

Piran is good for just wandering. I would recommend stopping at Nika's Tiny House to look at art made from driftwood. Very unique. https://nikastinyhouse.si/

I am in Ljubljana now and it is a very delightful town, the markets are great, the castle walk up is extremely steep and the path is not very pleasant under foot in my opinion, but there is the funicular ride. Depending upon when you are there there is a Sunday flea market on the Cobblers Bridge. The city was very crowded.

I went to Lake Bled today by public bus ehich is very easy and frequent and in the five euro category one way. Delightful day the walk up to the castle is on very well defined and maintained paths and all though steep was fairly easy. Stop at the church is you enter the town, their price for the lake lead cake was extremely reasonable and the interior of the church was lovely. I was disappointed in leaving Blood Center to walk around the lake that starting on the castle side the lake is hidden. So if you're going to walk any distance around the lake I would start on the side opposite the castle.

It is now Sunday in Ljubljana. I thought I would add in update to my previous post. The flea market was great. No grocery stores were open, no convenience stores were open. I would say 99% of the shops were closed there were a few open in the old town but, all restaurants seem to be operating as usual. The shops that were opened were the souvenir type shops selling chocolate, Olive oil, Slovenian products etc.

Recommendations for Piran: (1) "Piran Walking Tours" sunset tour with food and wine tasting. When I was there in the summer of 2016, this local tour company was just starting out. I'm glad to see they have continued and expanded. Rather than a traditional food tour that stops at restaurants or vendors, this was a regualr walking tour that ended at a scenic spot to watch the sunset and enjoy local wine and cheese the guides provided picnic style. (2) Ladja Podlanica restaurant is on a boat in the harbor and was recommended by the walking tour guide. At the time I was there, this was a very local hidden gem but probably more widely discovered by now. They had very fresh seafood served at communal tables. Two women sitting near me were very curious as to how I knew about the place, and proceeded to share food with me and take me around town.

I was there last week and I don't know how I could have missed a boat restaurant but if you say it's still there then I guess I did!

Hi Janet_Kupfer: I checked and the restaurant is definitely still there but I think the boat is not large and is both restaurant and fishing boat used to catch what they serve. That may mean that it is not docked in the harbor at the times they are off fishing
