Skocjan Caves and Lipica Stud Farm: Best Way to See Them from Ljubljana?

We are arriving Ljubljana on Saturday, August 29th, and would like to visit Skocjan Caves and Lipica Stud Farm on Sunday, August 30th, prior to joining up with a Rick Steves Adriatic Tour on Monday, August 31st. We are staying in Ljubljana from Saturday through Monday, and need info about either a) a tour to these two sites; b) a driver who can take us to these two sites; or c) info regarding renting a car for the day and driving ourselves. Does anyone have insights/advice for us?

I visited both in one day a few years ago, by rental car. But I started in Kobarid, not Ljubljana. I don't think it is very far of a drive from Ljubljana.

Check the schedule for tours or shows at Lipica and coordinate around that. (I did not actually take a tour at the farm.) I think the caves have hourly tours - probably more flexible than the limited number of opportunities at Lipica. Of course, end of August will probably be busy so you may have to arrive earlier for a cave tour or (if you can?) reserve one online.

It should be easy to rent a car for a day. Try all the usual sites - also EconomyCarRentals, Kemwel, etc. You can probably walk up to the train station in Ljubljana and pick up a car there (e.g. with Sixt - I rented one there with Sixt years ago). You will probably have to drop it off after hours on a Sunday, but usually they allow you to do that - leave the car locked in a designated spot, drop the keys in a box, etc. Driving in Slovenia is pretty easy.

Hi there Susan,

You have a few options as mentioned

Roundabout Tours have their Karst and Coast tour which visits Piran, Skocjan caves but only visits the fields at Lipica but this could be an option if you want a day out.

You can also hire a driver for a day which will incur waiting time fees but could be a good option for you as well as renting a car for the day.

Performances run at Lipica on Sundays and last about 45 minutes, after that you can tour the stud farm (another hour).
Skocjan takes about 1.5 hours.

cheers
