I'm going to be traveling by train from Ljubljana to Vienna in a couple of weeks. I want to be sure to book the scenic route. Can anyone tell me if the Eurocity 150 is the route that travels on the semmering line? I'm confused about the train routes. Thanks!
You really have two options: train through Villach or through Maribor and Graz. Both lines go from Bruck/Mur on to Vienna for about the last two hours. I haven't taken the path through Villach.
Looking at the schedule, the direct train is the EC 150 through Maribor/Graz. The ride through Slovenia is nice but I wouldn't call it quite stunning. I took the train between Ljubljana and Maribor/Graz and between Graz and Salzburg which would be part of the same line you'd be taking on to Vienna, through the alps, and that part is very scenic and beautiful (stunning). The EC 150 gets into Vienna at about 10PM - with long days in June, most of the ride would be in the sun so that's good - you might see the sun setting across the alps which could be pretty.
I might personally opt for the earlier train (via Maribor/Graz but connect in Pragersko to EC 158) just because the timing is better - leave at 8am, get into Vienna by 2PM instead of late at night.
Thank you for your quick reply and information. That was really helpful.
