  1. A month sounds great. Our planned trip is only 22 days.
  2. I think you insane to sleep in 12 different lodging units. Try covering less ground and set a minimum stay at 3 nights. Move a little slower and smell the flowers.
  3. Piran, Riovinj, Porec and Pula are all very similar according to what I have read. Pick one.
  4. Why the Postojna caves when the Škocjan caves are supposedly better and closer to Osp?
  5. Plan to spend more time walking and less time driving.
  6. I loved Bolzano.

Rovinj and Porec are not similar, visually, and Pula has Roman ruins. I have not been to Piran recently so won't comment on it.

I agree that changing hotels so often is not my style, but it's probably not quite as much of a hassle when you have a rental car. I'm dependent on public transportation.

The Skocjan Caves are "better" for purists. One could argue about which cave system is better for a family with children--or even for much older travelers. I found the lower light level at Skocjan meant that I (63 at the time) couldn't really discern the color differences the guide was talking out.

I liked Bolzano a lot as well, but one must be prepare to swelter there in summer. The museum housing the Iceman is pretty much a must-see when traveling with children. It's also interesting for adults.

We spent 3 weeks driving through Germany, Austria, Slovenia & Italy in June/July. We stayed in 6 spots, most places we stayed 3 nights or more. We saw a lot, but had plenty of down time just relaxing. We’d sightsee in the morning, have lunch, then back to the apartment to relax, then back out in the evening. We’ve travelled like we’re on “The Amazing Race”, that can get exhausting. Constantly moving = no relaxation + grumpy kids. Give yourself time to enjoy where you are, not just see things as you drive by. Slovenia is small. Ljubljana is only 2.5 hours from Venice. Find 3-4 “home bases” in Slovenia, plus Venice, and enjoy those areas. Count on it being HOT, especially in Venice. And PACKED in Venice. Reserve places with a/c. Plan on gelato every day ( maybe twice a day!).

thanks for those answers !

We will read more about Skocjan vs Postojna and will choose what seems to suits us best !

We are not first time travellers, It will be our 6th trip in Europe and the third one with kids. They are travelling with us since they are are born so it,s not a problem. Maybe we could try to cut some lodging but we wont reduce the general planned trip (maybe cut a town here or there but not a whole country).
