restrictions on taking rental car from Croatia to Slovenia?

We will be renting a car in Dubrovnik and driving to Split and Plitvice Lakes and then plan to drive around Slovenia. We will stay in Ljubljana and somewhere in the Julian Alps. Are there any restrictions on taking the car into Slovenia?

You’ll need to check with your rental car company, it really depends on them.

We rent often in Croatia and drive to Slovenia. Just tell the rental agency. There is an extra charge, I believe we paid about an extra $100.

We rented in Bratislava through Europcar. No issues moving through Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, and Slovenia. Just make sure your car is equipped with a vignette, usually for the issuing country. You need one for Hungary, and Slovenia. The vignette tracks your car's license plate. In Croatia, you have to pay tolls at toll booths.

I think Deirdre is talking about 2 different things. The vignette is how tolls are paid (electronically, no toll booths) in Slovenia. Your main question I believe is about the green card. To take the car into Slovenia, you must pay the border crossing fee to the car rental company ahead of time and get the green card. I rented through Nova Car in Croatia last year and purchased this online with my rental and it was $50. The green card was with my documents at pick up. You don't do anything with it, you just need it in case of an accident or incident. If you don't purchase this, you would not be following your rental agreement if you left Croatia with the car. We were able to bring the car into most countries in the vicinity (there were some not allowed, one that comes to mind was Albania). Check with your rental company.
