Looking for a taste of Slovenian food in Ljubljana

Slovenian food varies by region but we like Julja, eating there both times we have been in the city, and last month we had a good meal at Marley and Me next door. Both are in the old city center on Stari trg.

I started my first morning with the Free Walking Tour and the guides always point out great spots to eat. Then upon recommendation of a fellow RS Forum member, I booked Ljubljanayum Food tour. It was excellent & we stopped multiple places for local food, wine, farmer's market, etc. and the guide would recommend other restaurants along the way. If you are in Ljubljana on a Friday, Odprta Kuhna (open kitchen) is in the evening and there are probably 75+ booths with many kinds of local food, wine and beer so you can try multiple places and maybe note more restaurants you want to try for a longer meal later. Not fancy but one of my favorites was Klobasarna for sausage & Ričet. Romantika for gelato and le Potica for miniature potička were great dessert stops.

This is a good site to look at as well https://www.visitljubljana.com/en/visitors/food-and-drink/

We were in Ljubljana two weeks ago, and ate at several great places; we don't share the opinion for Julija, as we felt it to be just okay, especially for the price (the wine was very good, however). The 'open kitchen' in the square ran all day and into the evening on Friday, and offered varied options and a great atmosphere. Klobsarna was a nice and economical snack. Le Petit Cafe, while not entirely Slovenian, offered lovely meals (rabbit was a hit) and service, and Gostilina Sestica proved to be a highlight of our trip there.

We are in Ljubljana currently and just at lunch at a restaurant called Violina, in the old town center (Old Square 21). It was recommended by a shopkeeper and is funded by the city to help those with special needs develop life skills. The food is traditional Slovenian, incredibly inexpensive and delicious. There is a limited menu; usually 3-4 selections per day. I would highly recommend!

We also enjoyed Marley and Me, and their cream cake was delicious!

For something fun, Odprta kuhna (Open kitchen) is a one-of-a-kind food market that brings food lovers and culinary adventurers to Ljubljana's city centre (Pogačarjev trg) every sunny Friday from March until November. The only bad thing is trying to decide which of the many different dishes to have. It is very popular, and there are also bands playing. We truly loved the experience.
