Recommendations for travel from Split to Slovenia (Ljubijana)

After our stay in Split we would like to travel to Slovenia, most likely Ljubijana. We would like to hear any experiences (good or bad)/recommendations/thoughts on the best way to do this (other than flying, which doesn't seem to be a practicality, or driving, which we're not planning on doing this trip). If the connection is via Zagreb, should we plan on staying overnight? Thanks!! (This will be mid-/late-June, e.g., June 23.)

I never found a great price flying into their capital when planning vacations. The large discount carriers don't fly there (Brnik), and it is remote being a bit of a drive from the capital (Ljubiana). My spelling might be wrong, but I remember the flight coming in to a valley that was far from the city in a country you can drive across in two and half hours. It is a pretty country to drive through with green valleys and each town having a church on top of the mountain lit up a night. Their coastal towns of Piran, Izola, and Portoroz are a short drive on good highways from two cave systems that I recommend. Skojcan caves and Postojna Jama caves were very impressive with good interpreters. Their cute mountain town is Bled with a castle overlooking an island church on the lake. A rental car is the best way to see this country, and I remember Postojana Jama caves only being approximately about two and a half hours from Venice. I hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and for the advice. While we had really hoped to avoid renting a car, it looks like a car for a week to do Split->Ljubljana->Pula solves a couple of our issues. We're now off to explore the 'hidden' issues with a rental car! Thanks again.

Let us know what you find out...we may need to do the same thing.

Shari,

It looks like we're going to rent a car. That also makes getting into Split (from Dubrovnik) and back into Croatia (after Slovenia) more reasonable. AND, we have a car for touring Slovenia (which is what folks here have strongly advised. over and over). We resisted for as long as we could but, in the end, a car just makes a lot of things easier. Plus, the rates we're finding are incredibly good!

Of course, we're now fretting over the matter of parking at all our stays. [sigh]

here is where we stayed at lake bled, tourist farm just on the edge. easy walk downhill into town, in fact we walked the whole loop of the lake and up the SIGNIFICANT hill to the castle. tourist farm has hotel like rooms with breakfast, and also apts. we did not do caves.....other posters here have said its just like a cave in the usa, so in less you REALLY like caves.....id say do things above ground. I will say we got wicked lost trying to find the tourist farm after dark, I would say that signage is not excessive, and certainly not illuminated after dark.....but except for that we had no real issues with driving.
