Pre-post tour September Best of Adriatic suggestions

Planning on Sept 16 Best of Adriatic tour. Booking 2 pre night in Ljubljana

  1. Looking for suggestions on local tour to Scokjan caves and other stops Piran? for Monday the 15th. Don't want to rent a car

  2. Seeking suggestions also on pre tour city for a 3-4 night stay . Flights from the west coast are not great no matter so thinking 3 nights in Vienna then train to Ljubljana. Its been almost 30 years since I've been to Vienna and it was a quick stop. Venice I've been for an extended visit but don't want to repeat it necessarily.

  3. Post tour : additional time in Dubrovnik? Day trip trip Bay of Kotor ? Islands ? or head home?

Any suggestions welcome or other cities pretour you'd recommend with easy rail connections to Ljubljana to arrive there on the 14th

We had a son to visit in Austria and so also took the train from Vienna to Ljubljana when we did our trip to Slovenia, Croatia etc.... We changed in Salzburg. It was a nice train ride. After our trip, just a self-driving trip all over, we returned our car in Dubrovnik and flew back to Vienna for an overnight before flying back to the US. It was an early enough flight that we squeezed in one more afternoon and evening in Vienna. Worked well for us.

We enjoyed the Bay of Kotor and stayed in Kotor for 2 nights, within the walls. Haven't done the islands yet, so can't compare.

Slovenia Explorer has a very good reputation for small group tours (maximum 8 people) on this forum, but they do not run the Škocjan Caves/Piran GROUP tour on Mondays. You could always check the price on this as a private tour, but I'm guessing it will be fairly expensive. Škocjan Caves -- amazing. As I have said elsewhere on this forum, there is one enormous cavern where I wanted to grab a staff, slam it into the ground, and do my best Gandalf impression -- "You shall not pass!" Piran is also great. It will be a long day (10 hours) if you choose this tour.

I think Vienna works fine. Great city. Much to do. Different from what you will be doing on the tour.

Take as much extra time as you can to hang around in Europe. :)

Use it to go see what strikes you as being of interest.
