Postojna Cave - Getting There

Hello,
We are considering visiting the Postojna Cave while in Ljubljana this September. The tour by Slovenia Explorer has been recommended on the forum. However, it seems the cost only covers private transport. So, I am wondering about taking the bus. Has anyone done this?
Thanks!

I did this in April. There were buses that went to the town of Postojna on a pretty
frequent schedule, and fewer buses that went directly to the cave. Very inexpensive
as well (5.30 EUR each way). Comfortable motor coach.

If you take the bus to the town, I believe there are shuttles to take you to the cave
and the castle. But there's nothing of interest to see in the town, imo.

I looked online and am unable to see any schedule for July that goes from Ljubljana
direct to the cave. It seems unlikely that the bus would run in April but not in July.
So I'd check at the bus station to be certain when in Ljubljana. If you go to Google
Maps and click on the cave bus stop, someone has posted a schedule from Sept 2023.
It aligns with the buses I took (noon to Postojna, 16:13 back).

There is a nice cafeteria and a nice hotel on premise at the cave site, so if you have
to wait for a tour or for a bus after the tour, there is a comfortable place to do it. Also
note that they will take backpacks at the ticket office and hold them for you while
you're on the tour, but they close at 4pm, before the rest of the park closes.

I took the Slovenia explorer tour a few years ago. It picked up a block from Hotel Mrak in a minibus where the driver was also the tour guide. I think there were 5 others on the tour. I highly recommend their services.

Slovenia is a beautiful city that we visited this June 2024 and wish we had more time than 2 days there to explore beyond Llubjliana, Postojna Caves, Predjama Castle & Lake Bled. We did visit Postojna Caves but had a rental car so I cannot comment on transpo there but I do want to let you know that even though the Caves are a MUST visit, if there is anyone in your group with mobility or accessibility issues (wheelchair, walker, difficulty walking), the Caves will be difficult because after the nice 15 minute train ride further into the caves, there is about a kilometer of walking up and down steep walkways. My 78 year old mother was with us and we were unaware of the amount of walking and were passed up by three different tour groups. The walkways are wet from the moisture in the caves (and occassional drip from the overhead stalagmites!) but it is textured so there is little fear of slippage.
If you go to the Caves you should also visit Predjama Castle which is only 15 minutes away and well worth visiting. Its all steep staircases inside the castle built into the mountain so this is also not recommended for those with mobility or accessiblity issues either. My poor mother had to wait for us outside the castle but did enjoy an ice cream bar from the gift shop!

I suppose it depends on your definition of steep, but I didn't think the walkways
were steep. Yes, there are ups and downs, but there are railings, everything
is pretty well lit, and as noted, the floor is rippled for better traction.

On my tour, people with wheelchairs were being assisted by their families and
it appeared to not be a big issue. And while the tour guides are earnest and
informative, getting separated from your tour is not a big deal, other than the
other tours around you are probably being conducted in a different language.
At the end of the walking part, you board a train to get out of the cave, but
nobody is checking to see if everyone from a specific tour is together.

Thanks to everyone for the info. We should be okay with the cave walking. Just trying to figure out if booking a tour is worth the extra cost compared to taking the public bus. Cheers, Mary Lou
