Place to visit for three days prior to RS tour start in Ljubljana

Hello all, we are looking for a place to tour for three days in Sept. prior to our Adriatic tour with Rick Steves. We thought of Prague as we thought it would be good to be in Eastern Europe to make our trip cohesive. Does anyonr have any ideas of great places to visit within a day trip's travel? Thank you!

I suggest you look at Venice because it's an easy and cheap bus ride(+/-3 hours) to Ljubljana. The bus leaves from Marco Polo airport and takes you straight to the train station. We did this in August because we had a free day before meeting friends who were flying into Zagreb.

If you've never been to Venice, I second the vote for Venice.

We have taken 13 RS tours and always arrive in the first tour city several days before the tour begins. This enables us to visit sites in that first city that are not covered on the tour. The RS folks have always sent out a list of sights in that first city that are not covered on the tour and that list arrives before the tour begins which may be a little late to make additional travel arrangements. You might want to contact the RS office and see if they will send you an early copy of that non-visited sites list. We liked that tour and enjoyed our stay in Ljubljana. Happy travels.

Prague would be a great! I also agree with Venice, especially since Korçula was a walled Venetian town.

Also consider Vienna, since Slovenia has strong cultural and historical connections to Austria.

Finally, also consider a stop close to an airport with non-stop connections to your home airport. For me, that would be Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London and Paris. I can't speak for Frankfurt, but for the others I could visit time and time again. Especially Amsterdam.

suzie,

You could also consider Munich, as it's an easy train ride from there to Ljubljana. I did that prior to taking the Adriatic tour last year.

You mean within a day trip travel from Prague? Castles: Karlstejn, Krivoklat, Konopiste. Towns: Kutna Hora, Melnik. Concentration camp: Terezin. You can find more information about these places in Rick Steves book: Prague & the Czech Republic (with the exception of Melnik). Melnik is in the center of Bohemian wine area, historical town on the hill overlooking confluence of Vltava and Labe (Elbe) rivers.

Hi Suzie,
I'm taking the RS Adriatic tour on Sept 18th and will be arriving a day early in Ljublana just to get my bearings. Will you be on that one? Prior to that I will be spending 3 days in Barcelona on the way from San Francisco. Wish I could spend more time in Barcelona but I am sure I will be back.

I would recommend Munich or Venice. Both are amazing cities, not to large, and have good connections to Ljubljana. Enjoy your trip!
