Driving from Ljubljana to Venice in July 2017 and will have two nights to stay in route. Piran or Rovinj or somewhere else?
Both are fine, although Rovinj is somewhat of a detour. Also consider Trieste and the Goriska Brda and Vipava Valley wine regions. The Soca Valley is also definitely worth a visit if not on your itinerary while in Slovenia.
