One day tour, Ljubljana to Venice

I noticed that In the most current Rick Steves guide book, he mentions tour operators to Venice. Has anyone done this and have any comments for me? I’ve been to Venice before, so even though it doesn’t include all that much time in Venice, it would still be a treat to go there again. I’ve been to Ljubljana before, and so I don’t feel I need so much time there again. I will be on a tour. (not a R S tour).

It's about a 3-hour drive between Ljubljana and Venice (if there isn't a big clog of trucks on the highway). I did it in a GoOpti van a few months ago, and the driver was really moving along with the traffic. The other option is to take a bus or shuttle to Trieste, then train from Trieste to Venice, which probably would also take at least 3 hours one way. I've day-tripped from Rome to Florence, once, and that's about 2 hours each way by fast train; it was a slog of a day (but worth it!). Do you really want to spend 6 hours of a full day traveling in order to spend probably not much more than 6 hours in Venice? Maybe you do, but I hope you'll look at the logistics very carefully ...

I'll be in Slovenia for the first time in the fall, so I can't give you personal experience. I will say I'm finding plenty to keep me busy in Slovenia for 24 nights, including 5 nights in Ljubljana. I like to hike, so that fills about 1/3 of my days in Slovenia, but there are many other things to do that I think would be superlative to a quick repeat visit to Venice. Perhaps check out Slovenia Explorer or Roundabout Travel for small group trips that speak to you (both are highly rated on Trip Advisor). Both companies offer private tours, but there are lower-cost private guide options. I'm happy to share what I've found, if you would like.

That's way too far for one day IMHO. Save Venice for another time and give it the attention it deserves!

Thanks for the advice. Will probably go to Trieste via bus instead. Will start new thread for any tips. bTW I’ve already been to Ljubljana on a Rick Steves tour, so feel I can do something new while there.
