Need suggestions for 4 day Ljubljana/Bled/Alps

Hi, My husband and I will be picking our college age daughter up in Trieste, Italy on Sunday July 7 and taking the train into Ljubljana. We have four entire days to spend there before we fly back home. We are flying out of Ljubljana at 6:30 am on Friday July 12. From what I read, we could spend part of Sunday and all of Monday there in Ljubljana. Tuesday-Thursday i thought we could rent a car and take a few day trips? Possibly to Bled, spend a day there maybe even a night. My husband and I are 60 years old. We aren’t big hikers but we like to do drives and sightseeing. Would it be worth it to spend a day driving through the Julian Alps? Or driving across the border into Austria to see the Hochosterwitz castle? I have read about the caves too, but not sure that’s our cup of tea. As I said we like sightseeing, nature, side adventures,
Experiences, small hikes. We are trying to see as much of the area as we can in those 4 days. Any insights and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, I don’t know if we should base all 5 nights out of Ljubljana or stay there the first 2 and the switch to somewhere in or around Bled for 2 nights and then maybe the last night by the airport since our flight is so early.

Hi. We really enjoyed Ljubljana, but a day and a half there is probably enough; sounds good to spend the other three days elsewhere. If you like driving, probably renting a car would work. We enjoyed the Vintner Gorge near Bled, although be aware it takes longer than you might think because you park and take shuttle, then after gorge you hike back to start.
You will have to figure out logistics of getting to airport Friday am super early; perhaps returning rental car is best for that, would need to confirm if rental return is open that early. Have a great trip!

We rented a car in Ljubljana and drove to Lake Bled. Spent most of the day seeing the castle, taking a boat to the island and trying the Cream Cake. Then we drove up into the mountains to Kobarid where we spent 2 nights. The WW1 museum there is worthwhile. We also did a whitewater Kayaking lesson that was fun but plenty tame. Our lodging served an option dinner each night which we enjoyed too. At the end of our visit we drove the car back to Ljubljana and caught the train to Rijeka to continue our trip in Croatia.

We based in Ljubljana for 3 nights and did day trips by car - one day to Bled and one day to the Julian Alps.  We absolutely loved Ljubljana (and Slovenija), I will definitely return.  Originally we were going to go directly to Bled and skip Ljubljana and I'm so glad we didn't.  Ljubljana was a nice place to be in the evenings.  It's adorable and compact and doesn't require a lot of time to see the highlights.  If I had extra time I wouldn't have minded an overnight in Bled, but we got a nice taste of it by day.  We loved our apartment if you are looking for a recommendation.
