Munich --> Slovenia --> Austria --> Munich Itinerary feedback

Hi folks, I'm seeking feedback on an itinerary for an upcoming August 2025 trip flying in and out of Munich (mostly due to direct flights from the US). We are an active family with 2 elementary school age kids.

We are trying to minimize the hotel switches and have 1 home base in Slovenia, and 1 home base in Austria.

Day 1: Arrival in Munich
Arrive in Munich and pick up rental car. Rest.

Day 2: Explore Munich
Visit the Deutsches Museum , BMW Museum Head, Nymphenburg Palace or the Hellabrunn Zoo.

Day 3: Drive to Logarska Dolina (5 hours?)
Spend part of the day in Salzburg?

Day 4: Explore Logarska Dolina
Hike to Rinka Waterfall, maybe drive Panorama Road?

Day 5: Visit Robanov Kot or Solčava Panoramic Road?
Explore Robanov Kot

Day 6: Day Trip to Velika Planina
Drive to Velika Planina. Ride the cable car up, spend time in the village

Day 7: Relax in Logarska Dolina
Down day? Visit Matkov Kot?

Day 8: Drive to Zell am See/Kitzbühel (3.5 hours)
Drive from Logarska Dolina to Zell am See

Day 9: Explore Zell am See/Kitzbühel
Take the Schmittenhöhe or Hahnenkamm gondola.

Day 10: Day Trip to Kaprun
Visit Sigmund-Thun Gorge in Kaprun, Ride the Maiskogel Alpine Coaster.

Day 11: Day Trip to Berchtesgaden (1.5 hours)
Visit Königssee for a boat ride to St. Bartholomä. Hikes in Berchtesgaden National Park.

Day 12: Relax and Explore Local Area
Down day, swimming, boat rides etc.

Day 13: Drive Back to Munich (2 hours)
Drive back to Munich. Marienplatz or Viktualienmarkt?

Day 14: Day Trip or Explore Munich
Day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle

Day 15: Departure from Munich
Return rental car and fly out of Munich.

Open to suggestions on different home bases - especially if it gets us closer to the alps or more out of town into nature areas. We're the kind of family that likes to start the day with a 5 mile hike then relax in the afternoons by the pool.

Thanks!

The Eisreisenwelt ice cave is between Kaprun/Zell am See and Salzburg.

Day 1: Arrival in Munich
Arrive in Munich and pick up rental car.

I'd pick up the car on the day of departure. It's of no use for you in Munich (parkings are rare and the urban transport system is good) and it only causes costs for rent and parking.

Day 11: Day Trip to Berchtesgaden (1.5 hours)
Visit Königssee for a boat ride to St. Bartholomä.

This restriction will deprive you of the best part of the ride. Stay aboard to the the terminus (Salet) and hike from there to the Obersee (waterfall). You can have lunch at the Fischunkelalm.

Did you specifically select the east of Slovenia? I think the most impressive mountains and waterfalls can be found in the north-west. In my opinion this is way more interesting than sightseeing Austria.

Some ideas:

Dovzan gorge
Pernicnik waterfall
Vintgar Gorge
Lake Bled (of course)

If you stay in the east. Swiming at Lake Velenje can be nice.
Also Celje can be nice to visit, or a short stop at the Beer fountain in Zalec.

Happy travels!

Looks like a great adventure with your family! We just returned from a mostly Slovenia trip, with one night (for logistical reasons) in Klagenfurt, Austria. This is a summary of what we did: Slovenia Trip Report (22 days)

We loved the Logar Valley, it is an amazing area to visit. We stayed three nights and I wish we had been there longer.

Having said that, I would also research a different Slovenian home base that would give you more variety in scenery. In the Bovec or Kobarid areas, you would have access to both the Soča River valley and the mountains but still have access to lots of outdoor activities.

Also, take a look at leeshao's family trip with kids: Slovenia 14 days/13 nights Road trip

Happy planning!
