Before a Zagreb conference in mid-September 2025, I am considering a 5-day excursion to Slovenia and enjoy history, peaceful scenery, and short hikes. For the first 2 nights, I plan to stay in Llubljana to recover from jet lag after a red-eye flight to Zagreb from Washington DC (I have trouble sleeping on overnight flights). However, after that, I would like to rent a car (solo traveler) and am considering three potential destinations. I'm guessing it will be hot in early September. What are the pros and cons of a 2-night stay in Lake Bled, Bohinj, or the Logar Valley (Logarska Dolina)?
Hi Gilber. Of the areas you mention, I've only been to Bled. Pleasant and scenic, but compact and very touristy.
Based on a bit more reading, I am leaning toward Lake Bohinj for a 2-night stay to relax with a rental car. For those who stayed in that area, is it best to get all meals from the lodging (hotel), or are there cafes nearby?
Alternatively, are there public shuttle buses between Lake Bled and Bohinj? Since I'm not a fan or tourist buses or crowds, I suppose I could drive over to the town of Bled at the crack of dawn to walk around the lake, get some early photos, and have a morning breakfast before escaping back to the relative peace of Bohinj.
Lake Bohinj is a great choice. It’s beautiful. We stayed on the quiet side in Ukanc, which I recommend. There is a simple good restaurant and a mountain cable car all within walking distance. The mountain scenery was fairly dramatic. You can also walk along the scenic shore of the lake into Bohinj and return via historic tourist boat.
We did stop in Bled to walk by the lake and it was fairly crowded. Not much to it in my opinion.
Logar Valley was also a very pretty place we enjoyed. I think Lake Bohinj offers a little more variety in a small area, since it has both mountains and lake.
